I specialize in working with trauma survivors. For the past twelve years, I have been providing therapy to survivors of abusive relationships and intimate-partner violence,
sexual abuse
, and adult individuals who were molested as children. I am certified in EMDR, an integrative psychotherapy treatment for processing of traumatic memories and adverse experiences and bringing them to an adaptive resolution. I am curious about who my clients are and what they need; I see them as experts of their experiences and I feel honored to be a part of a mutual exploration of their preferred self.

I have extensive training in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder,
sexual abuse
/
assault
and combat veterans and have also served as an expert witness.
I believe that psychotherapy is a collaborative process, which occurs in a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship. My work with individuals is psychodynamic and insight-oriented, based on the idea that our sense of self is organized around the primary love relationships of early life, and that "mapping" these emotional experiences allows more freedom from self defeating behaviors and promotes the development of new choices. Integration and and processing early relationships can help one move towards a more conscious life in which you accept your past and are able to move towards a future of your own making.

My areas of expertise: trauma, PTSD, sexual
assault
, domestic violence.
We often forget that our first experience of the world is a shared one; that by nature we are relational beings. Which is why therapy can be so powerful. My job is to help you move away from the things that no longer work (perhaps never did), and toward a preferred way of being. Our process together is one of discovery & transformation, and honors both what you are and what you are becoming. You and I will collaborate to create an environment that is safe and supportive (I don't do that alone -- only you know what is safe). Through compassion & curiosity, our therapy will find new narratives and make meaning of old ones.

Also, I'm trained in Attachment Focused EMDR (EMDRIA Certified) and Trauma Resiliency Model which focuses on PTSD, long-term exposure to neglect, physical, and
sexual abuse
, and drug and alcohol dependency.
Most of us come into therapy seeking change. Maybe we hurt too much, feel lonely, depressed, anxious, or hate our job. Our relationship might be faltering or we're feeling overwhelmed by the family. What I've learned is that we come into therapy thinking that we have one story, or narrative, and that narrative is set and fixed. I believe we've forgotten that we have a multitude of stories, or alternative narratives. Those alternative narratives can be discovered and shed light on new options and possibilities, while expanding our understanding of what we once believed was unalterable.

Healing past traumas can be extremely scary. You may not even know where to start. A common misconception with trauma is that it happens once when you experience a car accident or an
assault
, but it's not always that way. Your trauma may be the result of not being supported as a child or having a string of toxic relationships. If you feel like your past is affecting your future, but you're not really sure why, what to do or where to start, that is totally normal. We will work together to uncover what your unique patterns are, how you fell into them and how they may be helping or hurting you.

Healing isn't something we do best in isolation. As a therapist, I work with clients to build greater connection and community to support them on their path. My clients are women and LGBTQIA+ folks seeking a therapy space where they can show up and be seen as their authentic selves. Many have a history of trauma, or have experienced interpersonal violence such as domestic abuse or sexual
assault
. Others are working to manage chronic stress and anxiety at work or at home. Whatever concerns are bringing you to my (online) office today, I'll work with you from a place of respect, curiosity, and collaboration.

At the end of the day, most, if not all of us want to feel a sense of safety, inner peace, and freedom. Traumas at all stages of life rob us of these basic needs, and can instead make us feel anxious, depressed, and unmotivated. I work with my clients to guide them to what is already inside of each of them. The parts inside all of us that long to feel safe, joyous, and free may feel so far away, but together, we can get in touch with them.

As a queer Black Arab immigrant, I recognize the importance of how social identities can have a great impact on someone's mental health. Even navigating the mental health system can be exhausting and at times disappointing. In my practice, I aim to provide a safe space for people who often struggle to find one due to systemic and social injustices. I assist people in the healing of their trauma and processing difficult experiences as they navigate living in a society that is in itself in need of healing. I am passionate about my work and love being present with my clients through their journey of healing and self-discovery.

I help my clients find meaning behind their preferred narrative. Whether youre experiencing a life transition, find it challenging in setting boundaries, attachment wounds, or navigating your cultural/racial identity you may be thinking, "Do I even belong here? Am I not good enough?”. These experiences may bring up anxiety, depressive thoughts, or even traumatic stress. Digging deep into the origins of these experiences may uncover wounds from intergenerational trauma, childhood trauma, intersectional identities or environmental triggers. I hope to provide you a safe and trusting space to be able to feel heard, seen, and validated.

Sexual Abuse Therapists
How do therapists treat sexual abuse?
A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.
Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?
Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.
How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?
Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.
Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?
As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
