NOTE: While as of January 2023, I am unable to accent new clients, please feel free to connect with any of my fellow colleagues as Nokdu Therapy (nokdutherapy.com) <3 My primary goal in working in mental health is to put myself out of a job. Given that each of us intrinsically know what we need to heal and grow, my approach to psychotherapy is to couple your expertise of being you – your reality and lived experiences – with my skillset, in order to collaboratively work towards achieving your goals. Through a culturally-affirming and healing-centered stance, I utilize evidence-based treatments to facilitate our work.

I work with adults and take on an eclectic approach, drawing from various modalities that fit clients’ needs, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
Healing. Self-Love. Boundaries. Fulfillment. Balance. Such popular terms associated with therapy, yet abstract concepts often presented as answers to a difficult time you may be going through. In an age and culture that endorses digestible content and immediate self-gratification, the reality that what we are looking for is actually a subjective, experiential process can be overlooked, diminished, and/or forgotten. Though not readily apparent, growth happens in discomfort and pain can be a compass.

I am certified in CBT by the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies and extensively trained in Comprehensive Dialectical Behavior Therapy ( DBT ), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, self-compassion and exposure protocols for anxiety and trauma.
I think of my therapist role more as that of an ethical partner, coach, and cheerleader with relevant expertise. Together, I work with my clients to discover the why, what, and how of their current struggles and a path to recovery – not in the service of problem-solving (although we do a lot of that!) but to help them build lives that are more meaningful, enjoyable, and sustainable. I balance nonjudgmental validation (no shame, no blame) with proven change strategies (tools to think, act, and ultimately feel differently). This synthesis between acceptance and change is the centerpiece of the modalities in which I specialize.

My therapeutic approach has been mainly trauma-focused. I have experience working with severe symptoms in clinical and group settings, I have experience leading both PHP and IOP groups for adolescents and adults in which we followed an evidence-based program. The program included meditation, art therapy, drum therapy, and yoga in addition to group therapy. I often use principles of Dialectal Behavioral Therapy ( DBT ), especially the focus on distress tolerance to help with teaching patients and clients skills to manage stress in intense situations.

We will approach our session topics with curiosity and explore what you need from the session. I will use interventions and skills from evidence-based practices like CBT and DBT based on your specific needs. These treatment modalities are proven to work!

While my core approach is informed by DBT , CBT, and EMDR, I also frequently incorporate practices for mindfulness and self-compassion as well as techniques from art therapy and Sandtray play therapy into treatment.
As we walk together, I will take care to employ a trauma-informed lens since I believe our pasts have a profound impact on our present and our futures. Using this trauma-informed lens, I will be mindful of your current triggers, taking care to move at a pace that feels right to you while also empowering you to take steps towards your future goals. As a bicultural clinician, I welcome all variations of cultural expression and enjoy working with members of both the BIPOC community and the LGBTQ community.

I believe there are times in all our lives when we need someone to help us navigate the rocky waters of life. Someone to help us to walk our own unique road and discover our individual answers. I have worked in community mental health with adults who struggle with addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders, depression, anxiety, and those who are incarcerated. My clinical leaning is a Cognitive Behavior Therapy approach. I also use Dialectical Behavior Therapy techniques along with psychoanalytic narrative and solution-focused techniques.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

DBT is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
