Are you stuck or blocked with moving towards the relationship, job, or inner calm you desire? Often at the core of feeling stuck or blocked is unprocessed trauma. While traumatic events happened in the past your mind may still be on high alert as if the event is happening right now. Trauma disconnects us from ourselves, our bodies and from others. It can interfere with our sleep , mood, thinking, and relationships along with our overall health and wellness. The good news is that our bodies are able to recover from such events and we can move out of the stuck places and recover our resiliency and courage.

Have you noticed that it's in the places you are supposed to be most relaxed (meditation, vacation, weekends, sleep ) that your mind feels louder than ever? It might feel like the idea of letting your thoughts go is meant for “normal” people and that does not include you. Maybe you stand guard to keep yourself from your worst case, as if your attention to your thoughts keeps you from descending into unimaginable fear. All the advice you get from those closest to you feels so out of touch with the agony of daily doubts around the things that matter most. Anxiety is the bully that tells you are both incapable and at constant risk.

I believe therapy can be incredibly transformative and I am passionate about helping others to live rich and meaningful lives. Depression, fear, anxiety, and self-limiting beliefs can keep us from living the life we desire. If you’re feeling stuck and overwhelmed, or perhaps you’ve been sleepwalking through life, feeling unfulfilled, and wanting more, please reach out. Whatever it is, we will work through it together and create lasting change in your life. My approach to counseling is integrative, collaborative, and relational. My style is warm, but direct and honest (and I often use humor, as I find it to be so healing).

Every client is unique and my approach varies depending on the needs of the client. At the heart of my practice is listening carefully and maintaining a stance of curiosity with the goal of trying to understand my client's unique experience in the world. I believe the most important factor of successful treatment is not theory or technique but the quality of the relationship between client and therapist. I work collaboratively with a warm, empathic, down-to-earth style that helps individuals feel comfortable, where dialogue and the process of reflection and exploration allow insight and growth to develop.

Psychotherapy has the greatest impact when it is collaborative, interactive, and trauma-informed. I provide a safe, empowering space where we can slow down & untangle the messiness of being a human. Some of the goals of our work together will include: managing stressors, breaking old patterns, setting healthy boundaries, and weathering the upsets of life through mindfulness, co-regulation, and self-compassion. Therapy is about connecting to your strengths and learning how to integrate your experiences, including your traumas, into a healed, authentic sense of self. I am trained in attachment-focused EMDR & the Hakomi method.

I believe that the therapeutic process is about attunement and connection. My style is curious, non-judgemental, and empathetic. I enjoy working with people who are dealing with anxiety, relationship issues, life transitions, and those who are ready to process experiences of trauma. I utilize a psychodynamic perspective which means I like to collaborate with the client in an exploration of their history to better understand themselves. I also work relationally and intersubjectively which means that together we will explore how the unconscious plays out within the therapeutic relationship.

If we have learned anything from the pandemic, it is that we all need and thrive in relationships. Therapy is an important tool for developing and nurturing positive relationships, both with others and with yourself. Using my training as a marriage and family therapist, my life experiences and love of people, I foster a safe, warm, non-judgmental environment. I believe that it is not the challenges or traumas that form us, but how we respond to them. Collaboratively we can build resiliency as we discover and heal the obstacles that interfere with you having a deeper, more meaningful life.

Sleep or Insomnia Therapists

How effective is treatment for insomnia?

The most effective treatments for insomnia are behavioral techniques that reduce anxiety, including anxiety about falling asleep, and allow the body’s natural cycles to be recalibrated. The most common treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), which researchers have found to be more useful than medication, with rates of success as high as 80 percent.

Are there specific medications for sleep problems?

There are many medications, both over-the-counter and prescription that treat sleep problems. Supplements such as melatonin are popular and may help, though there is little evidence that it is more effective than a placebo. Prescription medications such as zolpidem are sometimes prescribed.

Are there natural treatments for sleep problems?

There are many natural treatments for everyday sleep problems. Reducing blue-light emitting screens, setting a regular bedtime, regular exercise, reducing caffeine and nicotine consumption, and keeping the bedroom dark and cool at night are all lifestyle changes that can help those who struggle with sleep but may not reach the level of an insomnia diagnosis.

What’s the difference between having trouble falling asleep and insomnia?

Life events, stress, and anxiety can lead to sleepless nights for everyone from time to time. To be diagnosed with insomnia, a patient must experience trouble falling asleep, trouble remaining asleep, waking up too early, or non-restorative sleep at least three nights per week for at least one month. Sleep problems affect one-third to one-half of the population, while chronic insomnia affects about 10 to 15 percent of people.
