Joel M. Liebowitz is a Ph.D. in clinical psychology specializing in therapy with individuals, couples , teenagers and children and maintains a private practice in Los Angeles, CA. With over 45 years experience as a therapist, and as a graduate of University of Massachusetts specializing in psychodynamic therapy as well as CBT therapy he is currently serving as a private practitioner working with a broad spectrum of clients. Anger, shame, anxiety, depression, and perfectionism are emotions and traits that can be caused by trauma. Unresolved trauma can negatively affect our current relationships and family dynamics. My goal as a therapist is to collaborate with you in order to manage trauma-related symptoms and reach a more meaningful state. My way of conducting therapy is relational and trauma-informed. I help individuals struggling with trauma, depression, and anxiety, and specialize in helping clients understand their patterns and break negative cycles. Toxic relationships, intergenerational trauma, enmeshment, and shame are areas of expertise. Often cycles exist due to beliefs and behaviors that are passed on from our environments and the people surrounding us—both past and present. I am very interested in who you are as an individual, but I also believe that since you do not exist in a vacuum, you cannot heal yourself in a vacuum either.

I am passionate about working with adolescents, adults, and couples who are seeking support with a wide range of issues, including shame, anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and concerns related to relationships, life transitions, sexuality, and identity. To meet the unique needs of each client, I draw on a range of therapeutic modalities and perspectives, including psychodynamic, somatic, family systems, parts work, and mindfulness techniques. I am also trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). I come to my work as a therapist with compassion, warmth, humor, and honesty.
