Since 1984, I've provided services for adults and adolescents in both inpatient and outpatient settings. I have varied experience with depression, trauma, abuse, grief/loss, personal growth, relationships, anxiety, and stress. I have also worked extensively with addictions and related issues ("co-dependency", eating disorders, alcoholism, dual diagnosis...).

If you're a high-achieving individual with frequent or intense anxiety, you may feel discouraged and frustrated by your symptoms. Constant worry, obsessions, disrupted sleep and sudden anxiety attacks can be debilitating, even for the most competent person. I work with successful professionals, including physicians, attorneys, executives, creatives and entertainers, and their family members; I know it can be hard to seek help when you are used to solving your own problems. However, anxiety symptoms are very treatable when you work with a professional who offers the most effective approach.

My work focuses on helping individuals achieve a level of clarity and consciousness in their lives that can create a sense of joy, groundedness and growth. Growth can take many forms in one's life: improved relationships, improved sense of well-being, enhanced sense of self, reduction of painful/unwanted symptoms, career success, etc. My approach focuses on understanding and uncovering what stands in the way of one's growth. This process lays the groundwork for reaching a place of greater fulfillment. I seek to explore issues from the past/present to provide insight into what motivates present feelings and behaviors.

Hi, I am Dr. Hernandez. I am a bilingual English-Spanish speaking therapist. Psychotherapy "talk therapy" to me is an evolving, supportive, and yes, at times challenging conversation(s) that can lead to personal growth and help you through life's stressors. I have experience working with individuals with symptoms of depression, trauma, anxiety, feelings of anger, and loss.

My background includes a B.A. with Honors in Psychology from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Stanford University. I specialize in the treatment and assessment of children, but my practice extends as well to to the evaluation and psychotherapy of teens. adults,couples and geriatric populations. I practice in a setting with four psychiatrists (analysts and psychopharmacologists) who provide me with consultation if medical issues regarding medication arise. My psychological orientation in my practice is basically psychodynamic, relational, and social learning with an emphasis on one or more of those theoretical leanings depending on the presenting issues.

Then we can both rejoice in the change.

When we get stuck -- in a rut at work, in a stormy relationship, in a lukewarm marriage, with our children -- we suffer but are often unwilling to go to the heart of the trouble. Sometimes, we're not even aware of what the true issue is. All we can do is try to avoid the pain, skirt problems, even pretend we are fine. We are blocked by fear -- another word for anxiety. Together, we can walk slowly through that fear, and get to the other side.

I do whatever I can to provide safety for you to express feelings and discover more of who you are. I have an informal and occasional playful approach that might make it easier to open up, while my serious and deep level of engagement is a significant part of the work to provide a deep connection for growing resilience. Both are crucial in order to risk, use new tools, and create new patterns in relationships.
