I primarily use mindfulness -based theories and interventions.
Are you feeling stuck in habitual, repetitive, and painful thought patterns? Feeling anxious and on edge, struggling with emotional overwhelm and burnout? Or have you lost your motivation and passion and are feeling sad and alone? I can help you develop insight into why you are struggling, and teach you how to turn your pain into growth and strength. Life can be difficult and painful, and we all, at times, struggle. You are not alone, and you can feel better; you deserve to feel better.

They also support the mindfulness training central to my approach.
Working with adults and teens, my experience is largely with mood and anxiety disorders (particularly Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). This includes work with people at all stages of recovery from substance abuse and with survivors of sexual abuse. In addition, I partner with physicians in helping people live well with chronic pain or chronic medical conditions. I also have expertise in family work - helping people to negotiate the challenges of divorce and remarriage, and enhancing the lives of intercultural and interracial families. My approach is grounded in cognitive-behavioral, family systems, and attachment theories.

Modalities such as cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, mindfulness interventions, and emotionally focused couple therapy are a few examples of the treatments I use.
For more than a decade, I have successfully helped individuals, couples, and families find greater clarity about what they want their life to stand for and how to pursue that life. Within a supportive therapeutic relationship, I help my clients attain the vibrant and valued life they desire. My approach in therapy is active. I work based on the assumption that clients are able to achieve rapid and significant changes in their behaviors. The interventions used in this approach help clients access alternative ways of "problem solving" that utilize the resources beyond the "common-sense" mind. https://effective-therapy.com/

My passion is helping my clients understand themselves on a deeper level and be able to engage with their everyday lives in a positive way. I have interests and expertise in helping my clients work through many areas including stress and anxiety, depression, trauma, grief or loss, relationship and sexual concerns, self-esteem, and life transitions. I have experience working with teens, adults, and couples.

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
