As an expert in marriage and family therapy, I have advanced training and experience to address an array of problems faced by individuals, couples and families.
Individuals, couples, and families deserve the right to overcome life's challenges. The strongest can get bogged down by sadness, worry, stress, or difficulties in close relationships. Moreover, even the best couples can find themselves stuck in patterns of poor communication often resulting in feelings of isolation despite the strong desire for closeness. Lastly, the family is one of the most important environments that shape our lives. Yet, unexpected events can derail individual and family relationships and development. My goal is to help you tap into the courage and strength you posses and move from distress to empowerment.

Born and raised in Southern California, I received a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology, emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy, from Antioch University, Santa Barbara.
I’m so glad you’re showing up for yourself. You may have arrived here today because you feel a nudge in your spirit to lean into healing and growth. You realize the weight of the life experiences you’ve been carrying are hindering you, stealing your peace and joy, and disrupting your connection with yourself and the people you care for most. You are ready to explore the root causes, and you want support as you learn and unlearn, and become more yourself. Shame has eaten away at your insecurities and wounds. You know you can’t do it alone, but you feel alone. I want you to know: You are not alone. We were created for connection.

Hi. My name is Luis Maimoni. I am a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in relationships of all kinds. Relationships with partners, with friends and family, and with co-workers are vital parts of our lives. When our relationships are great, we feel great. When our relationships are "having difficulties" or "experiencing challenges", so are we. If you're reading this, my guess is that one or more of your relationships is not in the "great" category. I can relate.

: marriage , family planning); support for separated couples seeking to co-parent together; and Trauma-focused therapy.
I currently only offer online and in-home therapy. When we are in the midst of crisis we can question our abilities to overcome. Like quicksand, these self-defeating thoughts pull us even deeper into despair and we may become seduced by seclusion. Instead, I believe we should strive to accept our struggles as the catalysts that can bring us into closer connection with others and thus be more empowered to overcome. My practice of therapy involves helping people realize that to struggle is not unique and that connections with others during those times can be the difference between surrendering to weakness and reclaiming your strength.

I also have a speciality in couples/ marital therapy.
I have extensive experience in the treatment of Depression, Anxiety,Panic disorders, and Relationship Issues. My approach to a person's problems involves the entire person. I have been trained extensively in the Neurobiological approach to treatment, which is often referred to as the Mind-Body connection. Having problematic physical symptoms as a result of being depressed and/or anxious is becoming more common and is very stressful. Our immune system, our ability to ward off disease can be greatly affected by our emotions. Depression, Anxiety/Panic, as well as the Stress caused by physical symptoms are very debilitating.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
