I know that it can be hard sometimes to ask for help. Are you feeling the pressure to be everything to everyone, and no one is there when you need them? Do you have feelings of not being enough, and hearing that inner critic remind you of your past? Taking the first steps on the road to heal can be scary, I am here to support, encourage & empower you. To support you as you release the anger, release the stress and release the love.

As an Asian American, and a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I take pride in maintaining a culturally sensitive , LGBTQ+ friendly, and trauma informed practice where people can tell their story.
Sometimes life can get difficult, for some it may feel like that more often than not. There is no shame in seeking out loved ones, friends, and professionals for support and help during those times. I provide a safe, supportive, non-judgmental but honest environment that promotes deeper connection with self self and others, and teach practical skills and techniques that people can use to better navigate their unique struggles. I focus on discovering a person's, family, or couple's strength and empowering their innate abilities to make healthy and meaningful change.

UPDATE: I am not currently accepting new clients at this time while I am on Parental Leave. I anticipate an August 2023 return. It is not easy to recognize when you might need help, and even harder to reach out to others during difficult times. I am sensitive to the difficulty of the therapy process and do my best to honor each person individually. Being culturally sensitive and competent in meeting the diverse needs of all of my clients is one of my biggest values as a psychologist. I value social justice and this informs my work immensely.

Hi, I'm glad you're here. Maybe you're feeling stuck, anxious, alone, in pain, or have the sense that something is missing. Many of my clients have childhood experiences of neglect or abuse, difficult attachment experiences, sexual trauma, and other histories that continue to affect the present. Together we will collaborate to create a safe, compassionate space where all parts of you can be seen without judgement. We will explore the past, identify and transform old patterns, and develop a present that supports deeper connection to self and others. We'll even find moments of humor and joy.

I specialize in doing indepth culturally sensitive work that considers current as well as past issues in our work.
I am a licensed psychologist. My work is based on the contemporary research in the areas of development, attachment, neuropsychology, and psychoanalysis. This research indicates that a therapeutic relationship can help rework a person's internal emotional world and cognitive capabilities. The growth in therapy allows individuals to engage in more genuine and intimate relationships with others and to see themselves differently. It helps them be more effective in school and at work. I use a compassionate, practical, relational, and researched approach to help clients achieve meaningful lasting change.

Do you find yourself experiencing feelings of sadness or depression, feeling overwhelmed with stress or anxiety, or struggling with past trauma? I aim to work collaboratively to overcome depression, anxiety, painful memories, and more. I can help you learn the necessary skills to make their life a journey rather than a struggle.

Whether you are coming in experienced in therapy, no experience, with specific goals, or just checking in, I am glad you are here. Over my years of service I have emphasized the importance of representation in the mental health field. As a Queer Latinx therapist I incorporate my education in Women's Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, and Chicanx Studies into my theoretical framework. It can be difficult asking for help but I am glad you are taking this first step. También ofrezco servicios en Español y creo en la importancia de recibir terapia en el idioma en el que se sienta más cómodo.

Culturally Sensitive Therapists

How does culturally sensitive therapy work?

A culturally sensitive therapist will tailor their approach to therapy based on the individual client’s background. This may include changing their style of interaction (asking open-ended questions vs. being the “expert” voice), their affect (seeming warm or “neutral”), how much personal information they disclose about themselves, and more. It’s also important for a culturally sensitive therapist to acknowledge larger societal forces that may impact their client due to the client’s background.

How effective is culturally sensitive therapy?

Some professionals have expressed concern about highlighting cultural differences in therapy, suggesting that it might promote stereotypes and harm the therapeutic bond; however, many experts agree that cultural sensitivity tends to strengthen the connection between therapist and client and help clients feel heard and understood. A culturally sensitive approach to therapy can be especially helpful for those not in the cultural majority, especially when combined with proven therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

What are the limitations of a culturally sensitive approach to therapy?

While being culturally sensitive is generally a valuable skill to have, a therapist cannot treat every client from a similar background the same way. Each client is an individual with their own values, personal preferences, and life experiences that will need to be explored during therapy. In addition, it’s rare for a therapist and client to have identical backgrounds, so there may be some cross-cultural differences to navigate during therapy, but a culturally sensitive therapist can do so with empathy and respect.

Can culturally sensitive therapy be done online?

Yes, online therapy using a culturally sensitive approach can be beneficial. Therapy can sometimes be difficult to access for clients from diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic standing. The array of mental health support available through the internet makes it possible for clients to find a good therapist match regardless of where they live.
