Sometimes life becomes challenging. We get sad, depressed , overwhelmed, and often we can’t seem to get back to our “old self.” Sometimes we just need someone to talk through our feelings with no judgement. Therapy is a great way to navigate through these feelings and experiences and I look forward to working through it with you.

My specialty is treating stress, depression , and/or anxiety caused by different life factors.
Life has many challenges, twists, and turns that sometimes create unwanted feelings. Lately, you have noticed that you have been living in survival mode or maybe you have not been happy for a long time. Taking steps toward figuring this out and making progress towards change has been difficult. The desire is there, but something keeps holding you back from the ideal you, the ideal life, the ideal peace. Even though I am a therapist, I am human and experience life just as everyone else does. Because of my life experiences I am able to relate to so many situations we experience in life. My focus is to help you reach your goals.

You are a complex being. You've had painful life experiences that continue to impact you even though you don't want them to. You may find yourself feeling stuck, reacting in ways that don't make sense, and reliving past experiences over and over in your thoughts or even in your dreams. Fear comes out of nowhere, and it is exhausting being on guard all the time. It may feel like you can't trust anyone, sometimes not even yourself. But healing is possible. You deserve joy, peace, and deep healing. When you heal, you heal the generations before and after you.

Life throws us challenges for which we are not always prepared. Whether it's the sudden loss of a loved one, a child leaving the nest, trauma rearing its head years after a life-altering event, or learning to create a new life after the loss of a relationship, we sometimes find ourselves uncertain of what to do next. Through our work together, we will discover and take charge of what we can control and collaboratively develop strategies for coping and finding acceptance around the things we cannot.

Perhaps you are feeling anxious, sad, or “stuck.” You may be struggling with a transition, such as becoming a new parent, starting a new job, coping with a loss, or adapting to life after a difficult medical diagnosis. Or, perhaps you find yourself overwhelmed by fear and negative feelings for no apparent reason at all. If any of this sounds familiar to you, residual, unprocessed feelings from the past may be holding you back from living the life you desire. At Onward Healing, we specialize in using EMDR therapy to help you heal the wounds of your past, to enrich your experience of the present, and to clear a path onward.

It is possible to unlearn the messages that no longer serve you, and to work towards the life you want to build. Healing starts with validation of your lived experiences. Often, harmful messages about our race, gender, sexuality and ability can impact our self-perception, sense of safety and connection to others. We can work together to name, unlearn, and navigate through these messages, so you can live life authentically and joyfully.

You’re feeling worried, stressed, and overwhelmed with the day-to-day hustle of life, and you feel like you carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. You look like you've got it all together on the outside, but you’re struggling to feel like you’re enough on the inside. You're trying your best to hold it together, but you’re exhausted. It feels like no matter what you do, life still feels all over the place. You're ready to press the pause button and tend to yourself - to get to know how you feel, to think about what you want, and to make choices that serve your well-being. You're ready to make some changes but not sure how.

Successful therapy depends on a good therapeutic relationship between client and therapist in a confidential and safe environment to address and resolve what led to seek professional support. The past can't be changed but one's present, distressing reactions to memories of those past events can be changed dramatically and I have seen this result repeatedly in my practice. I am scheduling individual clients in my office on Mondays and Thursdays only, between noon and 6 p.m. Telephone and/or video sessions may be available at other times.Clients must be fully Covid-19 vaccinated for in person sessions.

If you are sick of having the same fight on repeat, staying up all night, alternating between doom-scrolling, online shopping, and planning imaginary trips, and you've run out of people you can turn to (because your religious/conservative/disconnected family is not an option, and you're too shy to keep telling your friends the same sob story) - I'm your therapist! OK, but if you need a therapist who won't flinch, who will go at the pace of the slowest part of you, and will listen and actually believe you: I'm your therapist! AND, if it's important to you that I am a WOC and openly queer...I'm your therapist!

There is nothing wrong with the way your brain works. You're going to hate this, but the key to thriving as a neurodivergent person is practicing self-compassion and giving yourself permission to do things the way you need to. I don't blame you for trying to "fix" yourself - many well-intentioned therapists get a lot of things wrong about neurodiversity, so of course you would be confused. Sometimes you feel so smart and capable but other times you feel like you’re falling behind, and you might wonder if you even deserve to feel better.

Are you ready for an outside the box approach? Do you want to move beyond your fears, your limiting beliefs and your emotional conditioning to be unapologetically YOU? Vulnerability can be really hard, and I will hold space for you to practice. As a holistic Therapist, we work together as a team and take a deep dive to uncover what's blocking your joy. I work somatically connecting you to your body, noticing your thoughts and navigating the head/heart connection. I have a deep passion for our spiritual self and know it's the pathway to inner peace. We will also laugh along the way as laughter is medicine that heals.

Stop punishing yourself for being human. It's ok to be strange, to have FOMO, to not have things figured out, or to have existential dread. You are still allowed to buy latte's and enjoy life. You do not have to prove your goodness, to defend your choices, or to earn happiness. If you're seeking therapy, there is a chance that life experiences have knocked you off course. And part of you is probably saying "it's not that bad." That's not for us to say! If things can be better for you, we'll make them better.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
