The challenges of everyday life can sometimes be overwhelming. Achieving a balance between relationships, career, and daily responsibilities while still caring for your personal and emotional health needs can be difficult. It is possible to live a fulfilling and joyful life even if you don't feel at your best right now. If you've been struggling with life stressors or relationships, counseling can provide an outlet to talk about those concerns, learn new coping skills, and get a handle on any emotions that are weighing you down.

Life is inherently challenging & we all find ourselves struggling at times. Emotional pain is part of our experience as human beings, it does not define us. In my practice I start by meeting a client where he or she is. I can help clients identify what emotions, habits, and beliefs are getting in the way of reaching personal goals, assist with developing skills, increase motivation and identify strengths to lead a more satisfying life. I enjoy working with clients to discover what needs to change and the best path to get there. I welcome whatever you bring and offer an open compassionate space to explore, heal and grow.

Law enforcement officers, first responders, correctional officers, and veterans have unique jobs, they experience things civilians couldn't imagine, they have mental health needs that aren't "the usual" everyday need. Helpers are exposed to secondary trauma, experience depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. If they ask for help they are considered weak. This is why it is important to maintain confidentiality and continue to work towards goals of decreasing these symptoms and increasing a healthier way of processing what they have been exposed to. Working with an experienced therapist the client feels they can trust is important.

Adolescence can be a difficult period of transition for many. Peer pressure, changing environments and non-traditional or abrupt family changes can be challenging for a child as well as a parent. Finding a connection with someone who can help manage and overcome feelings of inadequacy is the first step to wellness.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
