We all carry wounds and pain with us that can weigh us down, preventing us from becoming the person or mother we want to be. The moment we begin to heal those wounds, we blossom and grow into the individual we are capable of becoming. If you are feeling anxious, depressed, angry, stuck, resentful, unable to communicate needs and have positive relationships with others or yourself, you need professional support to help you unravel what is keeping you from reaching your full potential. I have 15 years experience working with mothers, children, families, couples, individuals of all backgrounds.

I am an African American/Black woman. I believe that representation matters in mental health services, especially as stigmas around mental health are being addressed as Black people/people of color are seeking therapy more often in today’s society. I am an Associate Clinical Social Work and received my Master of Social Work degree from Simmons University. My goal when working with my clients is to help you (the client and/or your family) learn how to better manage the symptoms and behaviors you experience while developing and maintaining positive coping skills. Is this the best it can be? You know you are not living your life to its fullest. You look around you at the state of the world and you see conflict, disasters, people being awful to each other and changes that happen so fast, no one can seem to keep up. It seems like you either have to shut down to the pain of the world, or you will drown in it. It’s so much easier in any given moment to lose yourself on your phone, or Netflix, or a drink or…. You can see that you’re checking out – and there’s a price to pay for that – but in the moment, you can’t muster anything better.

“COVID 19” Even the word makes us anxious; it immediately produces fear, anxiety, sadness, loneliness and grief. We are living in a strange time, a kind of bubble we’ve created to protect ourselves against an invisible enemy. We wear masks; we limit our contact with friends and family. We don’t go to shows, galleries, concerts or clubs. We have learned to adapt to very difficult and strange circumstances. Check my website for more information and suggestions on some of the best ways to cope. Here are a few suggestions: yoga, meditation, walking, staying connected by phone or social networks, keep a gratitude journal. Seek Help!

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
How can women prepare for therapy?
Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.
How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?
As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realized.
How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?
Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
