I help women resolve past trauma related to emotional deprivation and shame/fear-based messages in one's family of origin that has manifested as problems with
substance use
/abuse, perfectionism, and control.
Feeling trapped in an inner prison of emotional pain and a hostage to your past? Stuck in self-sabotaging patterns? Burdened by negative beliefs about yourself? Heal trauma and restore emotional well-being. The legacy of trauma is often difficult symptoms showing up as anxiety or depression and experiences of being ‘triggered’ in reaction to interpersonal situations. There is hope and a pathway that leads to healing. Through trauma resolution therapy with me you may restore emotional-well-being, develop an inner freedom, and awaken to a newfound wholeness you never thought possible.

Many are unsure if they have an addiction, or if they really are an alcoholic. Sometimes you drink too much, have regrets the next day, feel embarrassed about losing control and worry about your health. Drinking and using to numb the pain leaves you feeling very alone. You are sick of hiding, of keeping secrets. Should you stop altogether or figure out how to moderate? I can help this exploration in a non-judgmental way to find answers. Many people in recovery are often disappointed their ‘problems’ are not fixed; they feel stuck, depressed and anxious and relationship challenges persist.

There are times in our lives when we all struggle with fear and pain of one kind or another. Contacting a therapist can be fear-provoking in and of itself. Whether we are struggling with acute trauma or simply feeling challenged by facets of everyday life, we all occasionally long for empathy and guidance. Loss, depression/anxiety, addiction, even normal life transitional issues can leave us feeling powerless, frightened and lonely. Often we hesitate to share these feelings with friends or loved ones for fear of being a burden or worse, being judged.

Psychotherapy can alleviate psychological pain, help you know yourself better, and create opportunities to build healthier relationships. We will work together to get to know you, paying attention to your cultural context. This endeavor can bring to your awareness important unnoticed or unnamed patterns that have been causing you pain or difficulty. Most importantly, sharing your story with someone who empathizes can bring great relief.

I specialize in working with ADHD, HSP, and ASD. Being in our bodies- and being in our world- can be very difficult. This is especially true when when you're a highly sensitive person. My typical client often hears "you're being too much" while also dreading the feeling of not "being enough". I'm here to take a deep dive into what's making you feel like "too much" and highlight the ways you are "just enough for the right people". Typically, my client's goals are to live more comfortably in their sensitive skin, find liberation from shame, and better manage depression and anxiety.

As your psychotherapist, I am here to listen, and offer compassionate support. My style is warm, direct, and strives to be culturally sensitive. While the majority of my practice focuses on recovery from disordered eating and improving one's relationship with food and body, I also work to help persons who struggle to cope with trauma, anxiety, or depressed mood. In your course of treatment we can navigate issues such as low self-esteem, body image distress, and disordered eating behaviors.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.
How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.
How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
