I primarily use relational, psychodynamic , and multicultural approaches.
Psychotherapy can alleviate psychological pain, help you know yourself better, and create opportunities to build healthier relationships. We will work together to get to know you, paying attention to your cultural context. This endeavor can bring to your awareness important unnoticed or unnamed patterns that have been causing you pain or difficulty. Most importantly, sharing your story with someone who empathizes can bring great relief.

He is trained in cognitive behavioral, family systems, and psychodynamic modalities, and has extensive training and experience in mindfullness based relaxation techniques including the use of biofeedback.
I work with adolescents, and adults. It is my goal to work in partnership with you and the appropriate family and community members to consider all factors which may be influencing your mental health and well being. Together we will design a plan to support your own resilience and innate healing response. My philosophy is more pragmatic, than theoretical. The focus is not merely on the treatment of symptoms of the disorder, but on achieving health, and a renewed sense of purpose, meaning, and joy. I strive to provide responsive and effective assistance with compassion and respect.

AEDP is an integration of many approaches, such as attachment theory, mindfulness, somatic healing, and psychodynamic theory.
Our earliest experiences of life form the foundation for the rest of our life. I work with adults struggling to heal old wounds and reduce anxiety and conflict in their lives. Whether you're finding your own childhood experiences being triggered by your child's or partner's behavior today; a working parent attempting to balance competing needs of your workplace, partner, or child; feeling overwhelmed by life transitions (ie. divorce, loss of a loved one, new job, etc), suffering from perinatal anxiety or depression, or someone who has experienced a trauma or distressing memory and wants to be free of its grip, I welcome you.

Using a psychodynamic -informed approach, I help bring unconscious patterns to awareness while utilizing somatic techniques that focus on referencing the self through the body.
Do you feel alone in the midst of overwhelming emotions? Or maybe you feel lost, numb, or not fully alive? When we experience loss, grief, trauma, or any number of life transitions, we often experience disconnection and dis-integration: from within ourselves and in our relationships with others. This may help us to temporarily from feeling pain, but it also severs our connection to joy and spontaneity. You are not alone. Let me help you find your way back to wholeness through integrating your whole being, your relationship with yourself, and your connection with others.

For quickest response, please submit new client inquiries through my website, drmartintherapy.com. I work with children, adolescents, and young adults. My orientation is predominately psychodynamic . However, I tailor my approach to the individual needs of the client. In my work with children, I take a child-centered approach, using modalities such as play or talk therapy to help the child express his or her feelings and experiences that are often difficult to put into words.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
