After a long and diverse career, I am choosing to focus on clients who are experiencing suffering due to grief , loss , caregiving a loved one or transitioning into a new phase of life. I have a deep understanding of the emotional dysregulation that is caused by these experiences and hope to teach others the skills needed to lessen suffering and reduce stress and to stay present.

The Grief Recovery Method supports your grief work with a step-by-step process by which we unlearn the myths we've been taught about loss , learn how grief actually works (using your own experiences), and discover what undelivered emotional communications are left over from previous losses.
I help clients find what's blocking authenticity in relationship to themselves and others. Often we don't realize how the old hurts, bitterness, regret, shame and beliefs "contaminate" our communicate with others. The feeling underneath our message is also received by the other person. We tend to deny this fact, even though we see people reacting to us in unpredicted ways. I can help you uncover and process the non-verbal messages you are communicating, so that you can have honest, fulfilling and authentic relationships. I also help with depression, anxiety, grief and loss , life transitions, self-awareness and mindfulness.

Specializations include bereavement which may alternate between feelings of melancholy, worthlessness, anger or numbness.
Are you feeling caught between contradictory feelings of hope and despair? Finding a space where we can feel deeply understood is important to developing a secure sense of self. Psychotherapy offers a reflective space to explore the wordless thoughts, the nameless pain or the inner conflicts that may inhibit us. Through therapy a greater sense of integrity and meaning in life is possible. When we respond with genuine understanding and acceptance, hope may be restored and joy found. I listen to clients with openness and intuition. I encourage those I work with to begin to trust their own inner resources and find their own resilience.

I have been in practice for 32 years. Over time, my work has expanded from exclusive focus on treating adult children of alcoholics, to include- eating disorders, families of bipolar patients, academic underachievement, depression/ anxiety, trauma, and grief . Often these issues are interrelated, and sometimes the singular matter. Women-in-transition groups have also been a mainstay of my practice. Recently, I included hypnotherapy to deepen the experience where appropriate. As the practice continues to grow, I'm reminded daily that it is my life's privilege to work with families and individuals, helping in the growth and healing process.

Life can feel overwhelming, confusing and difficult. Relationships can be challenging. Change and loss can lead to uncertainty. All of this can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression. I help people make sense of their experience, navigate through difficult times and increase their self-awareness to achieve a greater sense of purpose, freedom, and choice in their lives. The therapeutic relationship is a collaborative space where you can work to understand and resolve your feelings, explore thoughts and behaviors that may have you feeling “stuck” in your life and identify relationship patterns that interfere with your well-being.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
