I believe that therapy is a sacred space where a client and therapist encounter to make transformative changes as a team. My indescribable joy as a therapist is to witness my clients rise from the misery of depression, anxiety , low self-esteem, parenting issues, and troubled relationships. These are my specialties guided by a principle that St. Irenaeus best describes, “a human fully alive is the glory of God.” I help clients connect with their inner potential and resources and build effective coping strategies specific to the personality, lifestyle, and predicament.

This sense of loss feels like an old story - even if you're not sure what's been lost. But in those moments when you dare to be still, you feel the gnawing in your soul. It's easier to just keep busy to escape the emptiness inside. It's possible to go on like this for a very long time. And many people do. You may even have been among the more successful ones. But now something has happened that exposed old wounds and vulnerabilities, and the pain is even harder to ignore. Despite your best efforts, anxiety and depression are getting the better of you, and relational hurts cut deeply. You feel so alone.

I’m Ulma Romero Garcia, an LCSW practicing in California, and I have a passion for helping others find the spark that they’ve always had inside and heal. It's not easy to live with anxiety or depression, but you do not have to do this alone.
Are you a teen or young person feeling overwhelmed by the future? Do you lie awake at night worried about where you will be in the next 5 years? I have helped many adolescents and young adults facing similiar challenges. You may notice nervous energy or episodes of intense stress that lead to decreased enjoyment in life and feeling depressed. Every person needs help sometimes, and it takes courage to acknowledge it when that person is ourselves. I've helped many young people in the same place that you're in. Utilizing proven methods, I empower young adults to heal from anxious overwhelm and take steps toward a whole & happy life.

Even though you may have struggled for years with depression, anxiety , relationship problems or habits and addiction, that doesn’t mean it should take years to overcome these problems.
My job is to see the world through your eyes, understand as much as I can what is happening to you. I test for symptoms. We find a baseline to get an accurate measure of what you are feeling or experiencing. Once I get that, we move to the next step of deciding together which problem to work on, and we create a priority of problems to address if there is more than one. We work as a team.

Anxiety Therapists

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?

Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?

The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?

Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?

Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
