Men's Issues - Dr. Dean
Psychologist, PsyD, QME, Author
La Jolla, CA 92037
I have been in practice since 2007 and have been featured on ABC, NBC, and KCAL as an expert psychologist. I work primarily with men who have hit “rock bottom” and would like help getting up. These men are often in crisis when we first meet. The issues I address are typically related to unhealthy sexual behaviors, infidelity, broken relationships, drugs/alcohol, dishonesty/lying, financial recklessness, and gambling. My therapy approach is a combination of psychoanalytic, cognitive-behavioral, and the 12-Step recovery model. I also share insight from my own painful but redemptive recovery journey.

Bernadette M. Di Toro
Psychologist, PsyD, MS
La Jolla, CA 92037
I work with thoughtful, capable individuals who are seeking more than symptom relief. Many of my clients are high-functioning on the outside, yet privately navigating stress, grief, life transition, relationship strain, health concerns, or emotional patterns that no longer feel aligned with who they are becoming. They may be moving through divorce, loss, parenting challenges, burnout, aging-related concerns, or a deeper desire to understand themselves more fully. My work helps clients slow down, listen inward, strengthen emotional capacity, and move forward with greater clarity, self-trust, and resilience.

High-functioning but quietly exhausted? If you’re overwhelmed with anxiety, racing thoughts, the relentless pressure to do more, or the urge to numb out, you may look like you're successfully holding it all together while your nervous system is stuck on overdrive. How did "too much" become "never enough"? You don’t have to keep performing as if "everything's fine" when it’s not. My work is heart-centered, body-based, and trauma-informed. Together, we'll move beyond coping skills to gently untangle patterns at the root, regulate stress, and restore a sense of internal safety so your life feels softer, steadier, and more sustainable.

You might look fine on the outside, but inside you feel anxious, unsettled, or quietly disconnected. Maybe you’ve spent years doubting yourself - your perceptions, your needs, your instincts. Maybe relationships feel confusing or draining, and you’re tired of losing yourself to keep the peace. Or maybe you carry a sense that something happened - something subtle, hard to name, not quite “trauma” - yet it changed how safe you feel being yourself. You don’t want to relive your past over and over. You want a way forward that feels steady, respectful, and real.

"Mowlana asked Shams: But what about our wounds? And he replied: The Light enters from where they are.” – Rumi. A core priority in my work is helping clients reclaim the power of their voice. Therapy is most meaningful as a collaborative process where you are not only heard, but truly attempted to be known. As an Iranian American therapist, I understand the richness and complexity of holding multiple cultural identities. I especially enjoy supporting Highly Sensitive People (HSPs), as well working with teenagers and adults navigating identity formation, relationships, and the often tender process of growing into themselves.

Hoarding Therapists
What is the most effective treatment for hoarding?
Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has been well-studied in the treatment of hoarding. This type of therapy includes changing beliefs surrounding possessions, as well as learning how to discard items and reduce acquisitions. The hoarder may also gain much-needed organizational skills. Another useful therapy may be compassion-focused therapy, which can address emotion regulation and negative self-perception.

How long does therapy for hoarding take?
Although treatment can vary, most people demonstrate improvement after 23 sessions, with some showing improvement after just a few sessions. Researchers have developed a 26-session cognitive behavioral program. People who hoard may need “maintenance” sessions over the years if the problem arises repeatedly.

Are there medications for hoarding?
The more commonly-prescribed medications for hoarding are including antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). This can include drugs such as venlafaxine and paroxetine. And because hoarding disorder is related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, medications for OCD, such as clomipramine, may be effective for hoarding as well.

Can hoarding come back after treatment?
Hoarding is a chronic disorder and it can last throughout an individual’s lifetime. Regularly checking in with a psychotherapist can help manage symptoms long-term. A good therapist will help the person learn needed skills including decision-making, organization, and stress reduction. The patient will gain a better perspective and the need to cling to useless items will lessen.
