Are you living a life you love, or are you stuck in the familiar “one step forward, two steps back” dance? Life can be colorfully painful, beautifully complicated, and completely overwhelming—and none of us were given a how-to guide. We all experience complicated twists and unexpected turns that cause sadness, worry, anger, and destructive patterns with food, drugs, alcohol, and within our closest relationships. Our lives are too short to lose precious time to unhappiness, feeling hopeless, and being stuck in the same vicious cycles. Therapy can give you a personalized roadmap to help you design a life you love.

Interpersonal relationships are powerful contributors to our overall health. Our intimate partner relationships,
family
relationships, work or peer relationships tend to affect us in meaningful ways. When our relational lives are strong and connected we feel satisfied, empowered, hopeful, and more confident. When our relational lives are hurting, we feel anxious, sad, pained, frustrated, and left not knowing what to do to improve it. I work with my clients to address the heart of their stressors working toward tangible results with lasting effects. I work collaboratively & passionately to create a safe, responsive, and supportive environment to address your needs.

One of the most important things for parents of pre-teens to remember, is that the biggest motivation for your child's behaviors is attention from you. Your child will try all sorts of things to get and keep your attention, and those behaviors that work will increase while those behaviors that don't will typically go away. Children love and thrive on praise from their parents, but in many cases, those behaviors that yield negative attention from you (such as yelling or punishing) will often reinforce those unappreciated behaviors, as well.

Court and civil litigation matters.
As a psychoanalyst I believe that an individual's feelings and behaviors are motivated by a variety of unconscious factors often resulting in people feeling stuck. Psychoanalysis helps individuals finally break these habits by understanding their root causes and enable significant changes at the very core of one's emotional responses. Using these experiences, the analyst helps the patient work on a deeply unconscious level to eliminate unproductive and destructive patterns. This opens the patient to new, fresh and genuine experiences and solutions in their lives. This process is achievable through empathy and respect.

Many professionals suffer from stress, anxiety, worry, or depression. Despite external success there is internal angst often impacting our daily lives and our relationships with colleagues and loved ones. Although materially successful we find ourselves feeling restless, trapped, or burnt out. I can help professionals who at times experience such feelings find their balance and regain their zest for life. After 15 years in corporate America where I saw highly functional colleagues struggle with stress and worry, I decided to become a Marriage and
Family Therapist
to serve this clientele to whom I could relate.

Kamran Zafar
Drug & Alcohol Counselor, CADAC, PhD
My name is Dr. Kamran Zafar and I am the founder and CEO of La Jolla Healing Center. I have been in recovery for more than 30 years and know how lonely it can get. Addiction can hit a person when they least expect it: when they're trying to manage an increase in their workload, fulfill obligations with
family
, or for no reason whatsoever. It often begins innocently — sometimes to relieve the stress of everyday life, or even just to experience the thrill of something new. Before the person knows it, they’re using alcohol or substances to cope with the negative feelings and stress in their daily lives.

My training includes:
Family
Systems, Cognitive-Behavioral Strategies, Development/Attachment, Contemporary Psychodynamic studies, and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.
My focus in our work is to accompany you, both as a guide and a companion, in your search for a deeper sense of yourself, finding your "place in the world", both individually and in relationship. I believe you have the wisdom within for your own growth and healing. In response to the problems in our lives, we all develop survival strategies and coping mechanisms that keep us disconnected from our true self. Because we do this unconsciously, the resulting thoughts and behaviors can sometimes make us wonder if something is wrong with us.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
