I am now accepting clients in California as well as Indiana! I work in a Virtual ONLY practice and I specialize in EMDR for those with substance use disorders, trauma, or a combination of the two. If you are someone who is trying to cope with substance use, trauma, depression, anxiety, relationship difficulties, chronic pain/illness, or leaving a high control group. I would be glad to try to help you find another, better way forward. And what that "better way" looks like is up to you. I see therapy as being a very personal and intimate experience for each person tailor my approach to suit each person I see in treatment.

I am a psychiatrist in San Diego specializing in psychodynamic psychotherapy with integrated medications when needed. My goal is to create a safe and comfortable space where we can explore aspects of your life that are difficult, unsatisfying, or confusing. My style is warm and authentic and my approach seeks to honor and understand how your past experiences may be impacting your current struggles. I believe that each individual has unique strengths and resiliencies which we will explore and harness in creating a treatment plan that is aligned with your values, needs, and goals.

As a psychoanalyst I believe that an individual's feelings and behaviors are motivated by a variety of unconscious factors often resulting in people feeling stuck. Psychoanalysis helps individuals finally break these habits by understanding their root causes and enable significant changes at the very core of one's emotional responses. Using these experiences, the analyst helps the patient work on a deeply unconscious level to eliminate unproductive and destructive patterns. This opens the patient to new, fresh and genuine experiences and solutions in their lives. This process is achievable through empathy and respect.

Therapy usually begins with taking stock of one's current situation in life, and figuring out the best way to move forward. I have been helping adults and children with difficult life situations and transitions for almost 30 years. My intent is to be understanding; to listen and to hear but also provide feedback, in an environment you can count on as confidential and safe. I work with children, adults, and families.

Are you struggling with how crazy the world has become? Do you feel lost, scared or confused? Are you looking for answers during a time when no one seems to have them? I might be able to help you. Before I was a therapist I was a client myself, struggling with addiction, PTSD and other issues as well. My journey of healing led me to becoming a therapist to help others heal. My clients find me to be compassionate, non-judgmental and informative. I tend to work intuitively, while using my training and experience as a guide. I am focused on helping my clients navigate their own healing journey as quickly and as painlessly as possible.

Trauma leaves us feeling broken, hopeless, or disconnected from our true selves. You may find yourself struggling to heal from childhood wounds, or maybe you are still reeling from a recent loss or huge life change. You find yourself overthinking constantly, unable to sleep, or overwhelmed by anxiety and painful memories. Maybe you’ve been to therapy before, but nothing has really worked. You want to find peace and heal, but you don’t know where to start. I work with adults, teens, and children who are seeking meaningful change and long-lasting healing from a painful past.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
