I have been a psychologist more than 25 years. This has given me an opportunity to develop a style that optimizes my skills and experience; to give you what you want or need to achieve personal satisfaction. My methodology is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and humanistic psychotherapy. It is important to me to understand your concerns without preconceived notions. Some tools I find helpful in this regard are knowledge, experience, intuition, patience, and caring.

My approach to therapy is focused on facilitating change in both perception and behavior leading to enhanced quality of life. The process is focused both historically (looking at early developmental experience) and in the moment (current perceptions, fears, and values that shape our current behavior). I find we each view the world in a unique way related specifically to our own developmental experiences and that view shapes what we expect from ourselves and others. It affects the decisions we make, and the direction our life takes, sometimes without us being fully aware of this powerful influencing force.

After almost 40 years as a therapist I still find working with adolescents and adults, exciting and challenging. Each person brings their unique issues to therapy and together we craft a way to move towards a positive solution. Therapy is a way to challenge yourself, reinvent and rediscover yourself. It is hard work and satisfying when you move towards accomplishing your personal goals.

Pain hurts and is often what brings us into therapy. Buried in the hurt is a small seed of a hope for change. As your therapist, I see you as a whole and complex person and not just your "problems." As safety and trust are created between us, therapy and the therapeutic relationship can be a vehicle for change and healing. The unique relationship we'll build will provide new ways of being and relating out in the world and within you.

I offer convenient services in your own home or just anywhere else you’d like. No stuffy offices or awkward clinical settings. I come to you on your own terms, wherever you feel most comfortable: your living room, a coffee shop, a local park. How about a walk & talk therapy session, instead of lying down on a couch? Sure thing. Coffee and counseling? I can do that. I use an effective combination of cognitive behavioral techniques and mindfulness practices to help kids and families develop lifelong coping skills. My approach lends itself well to tackling tough issues, such as anxiety and depression, and turning struggle into success.

My specialties are relationship issues and loss and grief. I have been in practice for over 18 years. I mainly see clients virtually and find it has been just as powerful and proactive as in person. Many clients like the convenience of being able to be in three different locations. In couples therapy, I will help you and your partner identify the conflict issues within your relationship. Couples therapy involves learning how to communicate more effectively, and how to listen more closely. In couples therapy I am proactive and direct helping the couple gain awareness of their "disconnect" by pointing out observed behaviors.

Having lived through a difficult life myself, I know the power of psychotherapy integrated with spirituality to bring permanent change to people's lives. I incorporate Attachment Theory (why we are the way we are); with Narrative Therapy (making meaning of and rewriting your life story); integrated with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Psychoanalytical Therapy to make meaning of and bring change to our patterns of thinking and behaving." Kimberlie has post graduate training at Harvard University and Duke University in ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, depression and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

The most fascinating and important part of my job as a therapist is how to have a really good conversation. It may sound too simple, but it cuts to the heart of what to expect from therapy. Through good conversation, you experience connection and understanding. When we are understood, difficult feelings change with resulting freedoms to engage life. Trained both as a Marriage and Family therapist and a psychoanalyst, I work with complex relationship issues, divorce and blended families, depression, anxiety, addictions, men's issues, and sexual trauma recovery, and integration of psychology and faith/spirituality.

How can I find a therapist in La Canada?
Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
What type of therapist is right for me?
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.
Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors. Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.
What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
