Therapy can be a source of tremendous relief and gratification. Unhappiness and anxiety that feel unbearable can lessen and disappear when you have someone who can help you understand the reasons for your suffering. A good therapist can also help you more easily get your mind off upsetting thoughts that preoccupy you. Or if you find yourself acting in self-defeating ways, studying it with a therapist can be of enormous help. Ideally, you will leave an initial consultation with a new way of thinking about the problem that brought you in.

In my practice, I support and mentor clients with various mental health diagnoses, or just problems in living, in their efforts to manage and address the internal and external factors causing them suffering. Because I am an elder with lots of experience, I can often help clients find and/or choose among various resources to help them live well. I believe we all have the capacity to grow. Even if you have tried therapy before, it is worth exploring newer methods and approaches.

Sometimes things are not quite working as we had hoped in our lives or relationships, or we feel stuck, confused or sad and we’re not sure what to do about it. Perhaps you’ve contemplated speaking to a therapist about your struggles or considered couples therapy with your partner but, naturally, feel hesitant. Reaching out to a psychologist is a big step that can have a positive impact on our current challenges, our relationships and on our lives as a whole. While we can do some part of untangling our conflicts on our own or with thoughtful friends, a deep healing process is one that often requires an experienced professional.

Sometimes this requires working with childhood experiences through exposure therapy, but it can also involve treating current OCD symptoms.
Anxiety, addiction, trauma, and relationships are my areas of expertise. I am a heady-yet-mindful person who works well with clients struggling with over-thinking, people-pleasing, and perfectionism. Many of my clients are creative, sensitive, and driven individuals who came from dysfunctional families and want to feel calmer and more free. I see entrepreneurs, co-founders, parents, couples, and individuals struggling in their relationships. I have a private practice in Marin County (Bay Area), CA, where I offer virtual and face-to-face therapy, consultation, and coaching for individuals and relationships.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists
How long does OCD treatment take?
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?
Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?
Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?
Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
