I have extensive experience with chemical addiction, love and sex addiction, anxiety and depression , domestic abuse, developmental trauma and low self-esteem.
I believe that feeling safe is the most necessary factor for us to create change in our lives. Each of us deserves to feel valued for who we are. Often our life experiences, beginning in childhood, have convinced us we are undeserving of happiness and good things. How can we create the life we long for if we don't believe we deserve it? Sometimes it is necessary to unlearn some of the distorted messages that came out of childhood. I can help you uncover what is in your way and help you to heal.

Anxiety, depression , & trauma can sidetrack us.
Welcome! Are you looking for support for yourself or someone you care about? I'm hoping to help. I find it particularly rewarding to work with people during transitions in their lives such as a career change/s, reconstructing life after a divorce, high school to college transition, newly married, grief support, new parents, or empty nesters, just to name a few. I value the process of helping my clients prioritize themselves and their needs as they navigate difficult and often inspiring times in life. Developing coping skills and self compassion will lead you to make decisions in your life that support your sense of wellbeing.

Many of the children I see exhibit problems paying attention and controlling their impulses, which interfere with making friends and with doing well in school while others struggle with anxiety and depression .
I treat adults as well as adolescents and children, most frequently through individual therapy. I also work with couples. I work with people with a wide range of problems and especially enjoy working with people experiencing anxiety in relationships or at work . I also enjoy working with people who are unhappy and don't know why, and people who are repeating self-defeating patterns they feel unable to change. Meeting with a well-trained and experienced therapist can be a powerful and effective way of strengthening one's confidence and developing a personal sense of control over one's life.

Areas of concern for my adult clients include depression , anxiety, loss, bereavement, infidelity, divorce, trauma, relationship/communication difficulties, parenting struggles, difficult life transitions and adult executive functioning/productivity issues.
I have been in practice as a licensed psychologist for the past 28 years in Marin County where I was also born and have raised my two boys. My approach to assessment and therapy is integrative as it attempts to consider all relevant biological, psychological and environmental influences on a person’s current well-being. Sessions leave ample space for depth-oriented, psychodynamic/attachment based processing of inner struggles and vulnerabilities. They also include collaborative, practical, and hands-on problem solving as well as exploration of cognitive behavioral tools and strategies appropriate to the developmental age.

Adolescence can be a very challenging time for teens and their families. Although developmentally it is a particularly wonderful time of exploration and curiosity for teens, sometimes things do not go as expected. Individual adolescent therapy and sessions incorporating parents and /or families can make this time much easier to negotiate. I see primarily adolescents, and often incorporate parents and families into treatment planning. Presenting issues may range from anxiety and depression to substance abuse and eating disorders where I hold additional certifications and trainings. I also see adults with persisting eating issues.

I treat problems including generalized anxiety disorder, depression , panic, PTSD and OCD, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. I work primarily with adults, older adults, adolescents (ages 16+) and their families. Cognitive therapy is active, directive, and structured- each session focuses on a specific set of problems. Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
