Adolescence can be a very challenging time for teens and their families. Although developmentally it is a particularly wonderful time of exploration and curiosity for teens, sometimes things do not go as expected. Individual adolescent therapy and sessions incorporating parents and /or families can make this time much easier to negotiate. I see primarily adolescents, and often incorporate parents and families into treatment planning. Presenting issues may range from
anxiety
and depression to substance abuse and eating disorders where I hold additional certifications and trainings. I also see adults with persisting eating issues.

Therapy can be a source of tremendous relief and gratification. Unhappiness and
anxiety
that feel unbearable can lessen and disappear when you have someone who can help you understand the reasons for your suffering. A good therapist can also help you more easily get your mind off upsetting thoughts that preoccupy you. Or if you find yourself acting in self-defeating ways, studying it with a therapist can be of enormous help. Ideally, you will leave an initial consultation with a new way of thinking about the problem that brought you in.

You have tried everything—done all the yoga, lifted all the weights, read Brené Brown’s books, but none of it feels like enough. There is still that thing (or things) that keeps coming up and gets in the way of you living your best life. Perhaps you are still full of
anxiety
or quick to anger even though you’re meditating every morning. Maybe you’re drinking too much, feel disconnected in your relationships, or just can’t seem to find the right relationship—whatever it is, you feel trapped in this cycle and recognize that you might need some help getting out of it. If this is resonating, you are not alone AND there is hope.

I am trained in a wide range of cognitive-behavioral therapies for mood and
anxiety
disorders, including some of the newest approaches that emphasize mindfulness and acceptance strategies.
Despite huge advances in modern technologies to extend life expectancy and increase physical comfort we have made only modest progress in relieving human psychological suffering that manifests as mood disorders and
anxiety
. It appears that many of our attempts to "fix" ourselves frequently backfire. My approach is highly collaborative and uses the most up to date discoveries in the field of behavioral science to help you "have a mind without your mind having you". Together we can help you gain flexibility that reduces suffering and learn skills that increase values-based living.

What are the most common treatments for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.
How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.
When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.
How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
