What brings you here? If you are scrolling through these pages, you are likely looking for support, either for yourself or someone you care about. While it is easier now to find psychological support, finding the right person to work with is as important as ever. While working with me you will be received in a warm, non-judgmental, and curiosity filled environment. While considering what brought you into therapy, we will reflect on the circumstances contributing to where you are today. Our focus will be on integrating what has been in order to develop into what can be.

You may notice yourself struggling with anxiety, loneliness and isolation or relationship difficulties. Many begin therapy when faced with crisis. Therapy is a commitment to the positive transformation and evolution of the self. It can be an incredibly powerful tool to promote understanding and insight in order to make choices that create meaningful change. My approach is collaborative, warm, engaged, and reflective, while also challenging patterns that may no longer serve you. I offer a compassionate space to support you in developing a deep self connection where you can uncover wounds and defenses that limit you.

I have been in private practice as a psychotherapist in Berkeley since 1994, working with adults individually and with couples and groups, on recovering from relationship and betrayal trauma. This trauma may manifest as recurring intrusive reminders of overwhelming and unresolved past experiences and as emotional / somatic distress in your present life. Or it may result from inadequate nurture and protection in childhood (attachment trauma). Often, both contribute to the need and desire for relief and a better life beyond trauma. Individualized trauma therapy addresses the need for a new relationship with your past.

I help people move through stuck patterns—overwhelm, self-criticism, relationship loops—so there’s more room for aliveness and choice. My approach is integrative and depth-oriented (relational, contemporary psychoanalytic, trauma-informed). Together we’ll slow down, notice what’s happening, and understand the meanings beneath symptoms so real change can take root.

Do you feel like your past is holding you back from fully experiencing the present? Or that you keep repeating old patterns, even in new relationships or situations? The unconscious mind is not a villain—rather, it helps us point to what needs attention and understanding. Traumatic experiences can leave deep wounds in our psyche, often without us even realizing their lasting impact. These unprocessed experiences can shape our present, influencing our relationships with others and with ourselves. I work with adults, teens, couples and families and also offer immigration psychological evaluations for immigration/legal purposes.

While you can't always avoid the challenges that arise in your life, you do have choices about how you address them. My approach draws from the idea that there is much to learn from these struggles, and that by decreasing the self-criticism and shame that make it hard for you to face yourself, you can create opportunities to see yourself more authentically. This process is supported with compassion and understanding for all the ways you have needed to hide and protect your vulnerable self. You can have clarity about setting boundaries and making decisions. You can start to feel more alive and have more freedom to be more "You!"

When we talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary. At some time in our lives, each of us may feel overwhelmed and need help dealing with life circumstances that lead to depression and/or anxiety. Problems with relationships, loss of a job, family issues, death of a loved one, can at times be debilitating and knock you off your game and make it hard to enjoy life. Psychotherapy can help you address your symptoms in a more permanent long-lasting way. It gives people a designated space and context in which to delve into difficult issues and then leave safely, without wounds exposed.

It is my belief that everyone navigates their way through their family of origin and early environment by developing strategies and coping techniques, essentially doing the best one can in the circumstances. Later, these ways of handling relationships and stressors can become limiting. Members of couples and families can also develop entrenched ways of relating that become partially based on assumptions. Frustration, anxiety, disappointment and resentment can result. Psychotherapy enables you to understand the evolution of these patterns and develop more choices in how you respond and relate to others.

People arrive at Jungian analysis for a variety of reasons, a life difficulty, trauma, crossroads, challenges with human relationships, curiosity around dreams and creativity, or a hunger to learn and explore Jungian topics. Jungian work is about reclaiming one's narrative, through integration of unconscious and conscious aspects of the self. This work can help a person feel more authentic, balanced and whole (the Jungian concept of individuation) or 'living life to one's own truest state'. I support a broad range of clients and work with people across the United States and Europe, with ages ranging from the 20s to 80s.

Life is tough and seeking help at any point helps you become the hero of your story. I've worked with clients dealing with everyday stress, milestones, traumas, and losses. One of the most amazing things I witness are people who want to bring positive changes into their lives and are willing to set aside time to work on themselves and their growth and often find they can improve their lives in ways that surpass expectations.

Psychoanalytic Therapists
Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.

How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.

Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.

Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
