adolescent
is regularly experiencing overwhelming feelings of worry, anxiety, panic, sadness (or all of the above!) and feel stuck in them, I can help. I specialize in therapy that brings an enduring sense of calm and confidence, frees us to focus on what really matters in life, and is grounded in the latest science. I am often described as a supportive, warm, and relatable clinician who gives freedom for authenticity, humor and exploration.

I love working with children and adolescents. Before I get a history from you, I like to meet with your
teenager
to let them feel like they have a choice in picking their therapist. This gives them a sense of control and they are then more committed to the therapy. I will integrate the family as necessary. I have extensive success with children of divorce, those experiencing anxiety, depression, low self esteem and difficulty managing anger. I also connect well with adults and young adults dealing with life transitions.

Relationships are challenging - even in the best circumstances. This is certainly true when building or maintaining a relationship with someone who may feel stressed, sad, or acting out in anger. Many people today feel overwhelmed, alone, judged or misunderstood. There is hope, though, in that you can be the solution! Through a unique approach, I work with children, teenagers, and adults to develop their sense of selves, decrease stress, and establish rewarding relationships. Having this space has helped many people better understand and manage their lives.

Many of us strive to feel more productive, self-confident, and grounded. But when we also experience anxiety, depression, trauma, troubled relationships, illness, poor self-esteem or other challenges, achieving our goals can be difficult. That’s why working with a therapist can be a great choice. Teaming up with an attentive, well-trained therapist you will likely feel less alone, and your problems may begin to feel more manageable. You might be surprised that when you and your therapist examine your difficulties from new angles, you or your pre/
teen
will grow and change in ways you never expected.

Well-being includes being centered in body, mind and spirit; also happiness and health. Therapy can be a journey to reaching a state of balance and self-love. The challenge is to face and overcome the hardships and stressors that have a nasty habit of getting in the way of being our best self. Getting there isn’t always easy, but having someone to support you along the way is a courageous step in the right direction.

What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
