I work with adult individuals and couples in transition or crisis.
In this situation you must become an explorer, creating a new map so you can find a way forward instead of wandering in circles. Some of this cartography takes place in the big picture & some in the small patterns and details. My goal is to support you in this complex, murky, experimental process, finding the right questions & experiments to help reorient

Doing couples therapy is something I love and have extensive training in this area of expertise.
I believe that human beings have an inner motivating force that moves them toward more health and fulfillment. Life is difficult. We all have our particular, usually life long issues that get in the way of our personal growth. The going is often ridiculously slow and repetitive; this is where therapy can be so helpful. I think and feel it is an honor to be let into someone’s life and be a catalyst for beneficial change. I believe in being happy NOW! So I will not hesitate to be straightforward and directive if I think it will be helpful.

I enjoy working with adults and couples of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations, and gender expressions.
Many of us have the desire to be truly listened to, seen, and deeply understood. I believe all of us have the answers within ourselves and our unique experiences, and sometimes we just need a little help from someone else to help us discover them. I'm not going to talk your ear off or mansplain your nervous system to you. I will listen, we will talk through things, I will challenge the way you look at things, there may be tears, and there will definitely be laughter.

I work with teens through seniors as well as love couples work.
I am here to support a decrease in shame and an increase in self-empowerment. Individuals who are brought up in distressed families can often experience challenges with addiction, anxiety, depression, sleep issues, and a lack of self worth in adulthood. Coping strategies that felt necessary at a younger age, things like perfectionism, procrastination, addiction, isolation, can become what keeps us from feeling we can have meaning in life. You can learn what is holding you back, and you can thrive despite what you have experienced. Hardships can make us deep and wise if we can interpret them in a healthy light.

You may be experiencing consequences of loss; trauma; relationship challenges & difficulties; estrangement from family; general anxiety, depression, or dissatisfaction.
Family, group, and relationship influence can result in inaccurate, self-limiting beliefs and unhealthy patterns. Discovering what causes unhappiness and distress and learning more effective skills can lead to a healthier, more fulfilling life. I receive feedback that clients feel heard, understood, and that our work together leads to successful outcomes.

If you are in a couple, and hoping to improve your connection and communication, deal with past hurts, or simply to be more loving to one another, we can work together to create a stronger relationship.
I can work with you to find out what you are most needing and then I use a mix of listening, helping you to sort through what matters to you, and teaching you problem-solving and coping techniques. With both individuals and couples I often assign homework because it is your life outside of therapy that is where you want to see the change.

I'm skilled at working with relationship issues (including adults with narcissistic parents or partners), trauma & EMDR, anxiety including panic & OCD, depression, loss/grief, performance enhancement at work & in sports, workplace issues & many other challenges.
I’m an experienced, active therapist, integrating techniques from models such as Internal Family Systems, EMDR & cognitive-behavioral therapy in my approach to our work. While I’m warm and caring, I’m also direct and focused on the change you seek; in the words one of my teachers, Terry Real, uses to describe his approach, I “avoid being heavy on nurture and short on truth.” I bring diverse professional & life experience, a sensitivity to culture & all other components of your identity, and an array of tools that you can use to find the growth, solutions, well-being, or healing you seek.

About half of my practice is with adults and couples and the other half is with adolescents and children.
Therapy can be a source of tremendous relief and gratification. Unhappiness and anxiety that feel unbearable can lessen and disappear when you have someone who can help you understand the reasons for your suffering. A good therapist can also help you more easily get your mind off upsetting thoughts that preoccupy you. Or if you find yourself acting in self-defeating ways, studying it with a therapist can be of enormous help. Ideally, you will leave an initial consultation with a new way of thinking about the problem that brought you in.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
