Sometimes, you have to feel your feelings! I often say this to help alleviate the guilt of expressing myself- whether it be sadness, happiness, frustration, etc. Hello, my name is Marsaides Mercier. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I have been a therapist for 13 years, with initial experience as a case manager. So what brought me to the field of therapy? Of course, I wanted to be helpful to others, and I was told, "I give great advice." However, over time I have learned therapy is not about giving "good advice" but more about helping others find their way to feel what they feel without the guilt of it all.

You’re desperate for some relief. It feels like the pressure of the world is sitting on your shoulders, slowly crushing you under its weight. If it’s not one thing, it’s another; dealing with your toxic ex, being undervalued at work and home, or simply living as a Black man in a systemically racist society. You try so hard to keep it all together, but sometimes you snap at friends and loved ones. You’ve begun to wonder if these troubles stem from past experiences. Your mother did her best, but you saw some terrible things growing up. If only there were some way to make sense of these overwhelming thoughts and emotions, but how?

As humans, we are wired for connection, but couples often get stuck in a negative cycle of conflict that blocks that connection and leaves them desperate to find it again. Please, don't give up on your relationship; there is hope, and I am here to help you dissolve those blocks and create new ways of feeling heard, seen, and understood. I especially enjoy working in the Christian, Black/African-American, and Latin communities.

Struggling with depression, anxiety, trauma, life transitions, feeling disconnected, burn out, and other life pains can be entirely too tough to manage alone. If you are a person of color, navigating these experiences may feel more isolating when you've never been taught to express them or never connected to resources. Whether you know your exact triggers or are completely unaware of the source of your discomfort we can all benefit from a space to be heard, expand our coping toolbox and experience the warmth of self care. Often times, challenges with mental health and psychological pain create feelings of unsafety in our own mind.

I am a former Bank Professional with many years of experience working with individuals and families in diverse communities. As a Clinician, I have created a special niche for professionals who need a safe space to enhance their own mental, financial and/or emotional health, as well as work through difficult personal and work relationships. I also work closely with couples who seek clarity, re-newed commitments and deeper connections to each other. Additionally, I provide pre-marital counseling with a focus on spiritual and financial health as financial stress and internal strife can be major sources of marital/partner conflicts.

Female Therapists
Does it matter what gender my therapist is?
In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.
Should I see a female therapist?
Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.
Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?
Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.
How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?
It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
