Life can be painful and difficult. Intimate relationships can be particularly challenging if you don't have the communication skills needed to express your feelings and resolve conflicts effectively. This can lead to anger, resentment, fear and loneliness. Over time, intimacy and sexual connection will often suffer due to these feelings. Therapy can help you sort through and understand the challenges you're facing, and identify solutions that work for you. With the proper support, things can get better.

Therapy can be life-changing. I know, because it saved my life. In private practice 26 years, I specialize in helping highly sensitive, intelligent, creative people who, counterintuitively by virtue of their gifts, can find life more challenging than most. Without a solid emotional foundation these gifts can lead to deep feelings of insecurity - personally and professionally. By using both traditional and cutting-edge tools, we'll eliminate your self-limiting beliefs and neutralize your negative conditioning. This rewarding process will be both enlightening and enjoyable, and will completely transform your day-to-day experience.

Although "pain" is something we would like to avoid, it is an inevitable part of life. But the positive aspect of painful experiences is that they can provide the opportunity to change... change that helps us grow and transform ourselves, bringing our lives a deeper sense of meaning. It is often very difficult to recognize these positive life changing opportunities while in the midst of profound pain or even after it subsides but that is where therapy can help. Collaborative work in therapy can facilitate awareness, promote healing, and illuminate paths for change leading to a more meaningful relationship with yourself and others...

I'm a psychotherapist working with individuals, couples and families in the LA area and Sandpoint, Idaho. 25 years experience in one location and challenge the problems facing our complex and diverse society today. I believe in the Unity of Life. From the earliest single cell forms of life, to the complex hu man organism, there is a basic energetic function that unites: Pain & Pleasure, Thinking & Emotion, Mind & Body, Man & Wo men, Family & Society. When this unitary function is disrupted and blocked, healthy life suffers. Conflict and stress from this unitary disruption often results in irrationality, unhappiness and/or disease.

We often forget that our first experience of the world is a shared one; that by nature we are relational beings. Which is why therapy can be so powerful. My job is to help you move away from the things that no longer work (perhaps never did), and toward a preferred way of being. Our process together is one of discovery & transformation, and honors both what you are and what you are becoming. You and I will collaborate to create an environment that is safe and supportive (I don't do that alone -- only you know what is safe). Through compassion & curiosity, our therapy will find new narratives and make meaning of old ones.

Speak your heart, live your truth! Are you feeling overwhelmed with the direction of your life? Is your job not emotionally or financially satisfying? Do you find yourself having difficult, short-lived relationships, or worse - none at all? Is depression and/or anxiety wearing you down?
It is my experience that our difficulties and problems are primarily determined by reactions to how we think and feel. I can help you understand how your thoughts and feelings prevent you from getting what you want, and then help you find ways of creating more success in the areas you desire to change.

I believe in the strength, creativity, and resilience of people. After twenty years in licensed practice, I can see more clearly than ever that people are not hopelessly stuck. I believe that people do the best they can in the face of difficult and challenging circumstances. However, it is easy to get stalled in unproductive patterns of behavior. I want to help people find new tools and new ways of relating to others. My work is to help people find new perspectives, new ways of looking at problems, so that they can approach life with confidence, assurance, and serenity.

I believe it is natural for hu mans to want to change how they feel. Unfortunately, how we seek this change can determine the difference between healthy vs. unhealthy behavior. My work is guiding you through an in-depth exploration of how early experiences have shaped your sense of self and how you manage feelings. My goal is to help you develop both a compassionate view of these experiences and a more secure sense of self. With a prior background in entertainment, I work with actors/artists/writers/entertainment professionals, grief/loss ( of people, time, dreams, pets), trauma, dual diagnosis and gay men navigating mid-life.

I offer secure video/phone individual and couples therapy sessions. It is my belief that therapy is a two-way street. You get out of it what you put into it. If you apply yourself and your efforts are sincere, your chances of success and improvement are far greater. I view myself as a facilitator, at times, as a therapist. A conduit between you and your truths. And at times I see my role as being more assertive and providing guidance when need be. I also understand the need, at times, to provide my clients with more specific answers to questions that they might have regarding their mental health concerns.

I use emotion-focused and cognitive methods, dream work, and attention to your unconscious to help you develop the "mental muscle" to stop avoiding yourself, in a warm and active manner that builds on your strengths.
With over twenty years experience in LGBTQ counseling, research, and teaching, I have a deep understanding of our community. Among LGBTQ individuals anxiety and depression may involve feelings of emptiness, relationship problems, interpersonal sensitivity, or addictions. The roots of these struggles can vary, but it helps to have a therapist who grasps the alienating impact of growing up in a world that disavows the core of who we are. I will help you address these issues, and others, through a deeper approach that can feel energizing, challenging, and even liberating.

Male Therapists
As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?
There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.
How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?
Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.
Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?
Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.
Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?
Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
