Judging you for your substance use or other life choices?
After I got my BA in Psychology from UC Santa Cruz in 2008, I built my clinical skills as crisis counselor and manager at a crisis residential program in San Francisco, where I finished my MSW from California State East Bay. From there, I deepened my experience with 7+ years work at San Francisco AIDS Foundation as a clinician and clinical supervisor.

I work from a non-judgmental, client focused stance with interests in: Love and Relationship Issues, Addiction, Anger, Compulsive behaviors, Stagnation, and grieving.
I work with people who wish to change self-limiting beliefs and destructive behaviors. I'll assist them in becoming aware of triggers, habits and unexamined assumptions which keep them stuck in repetitive cycles. By developing insight and understanding, they're often empowered to make new choices that are more in harmony with who they are and what they truly want.

I offer psychotherapy for Depression and Anxiety, Mood Instability, Relationship Problems, Chemical Dependency, Behavioral Addictions, Trauma/PTSD, ACOA (Adult Children of Alcoholics) and Codependency
People come to therapy for all sorts of reasons: Relief from sadness or anxiety, to break patterns that cause pain, to get clarity when you just don't know why life feels like an uphill battle or to simply get an "emotional tune-up." With compassion, emotional safety, and a clear, candid therapeutic style, I help people work through life's challenges using effective, evidence-based treatments that target the underlying causes for painful feelings. I believe healing happens holistically; Mind-Body-Spirit are aligned when people feel "right" within themselves.

I also work with teens and individuals exploring substance use.
You may be feeling overwhelmed in your relationships, uncertain about who you are, or stretched thin by the pressures of work and life. Maybe you're the one others rely on—but deep down, you're ready for change that’s actually sustainable. My clients often seek therapy when they’re at a turning point: wanting to feel more confident, more connected, and more in control. You don’t need to have it all figured out to begin—you just need a place where your challenges are met with clarity, care, and respect for your pace.

Left untreated, old pain, trauma, depression, anxiety and addiction can drain the pleasure and beauty from living.
Deep fulfillment and maturing vitality are our birthright. When this natural process of growth is interrupted, the individual suffers. When blockages to our experience of the moment are removed, we unfold how we were meant to. With aliveness and authenticity we can then have the profound relationships we yearn for.

Addiction covers a range of habits: Drugs, sex, Internet, food--all of possible concern.
We're artists, leaning into the world & willing our lives. And rapture, an essential feeling, leads us outward to be more truly ‘there’. Heidegger thus interprets Nietzsche’s “will to power:” A strong, full-bodied interest & movement towards the world, before us as a possibility but not always chosen. Poignantly, Heidegger (1961) names a “fallen” state: “Of someone who is intoxicated...he [sic] 'has' something like rapture. But his is not enraptured. The rapture of intoxication [does not raise one] beyond himself. What we are here calling rapture is merely...being 'soused,' something depriv[ing] us of every possible state of being."

My work with creative people informs my therapeutic process when working with teens and young adults, addiction and recovery, life transitions, family systems, women's issues, and the challenges we all face as human beings.
Do you feel STUCK, overwhelmed, or that you are not living your best life? Do you say to yourself “If only I could...” (fill in the blank: make more money, lose 10 pounds, get that promotion, etc.), then I would be able to live the life I’ve always imagined? Are you struggling in your relationships? Maybe you're looking for someone to talk to about your job, relationships, life goals, or negative thinking patterns. Therapy is not a "one size fits all" process, and I work with my clients to help them navigate life’s challenges. I applaud you for taking the first step and exploring therapy!

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
