Hi! My name is Kristin Flowers and I'm a licensed marriage and family therapist here in beautiful California. I specialize in helping anxious people to heal and recover from perfectionism, gas lighting, and toxic relationships, as well as past events or memories that may still be impacting life in a negative way. I help people who are trying to be perfect and feel exhausted and wondering who they are anymore. The people I help are feeling anxious, lonely, and stressed out to the breaking point. Sleep is difficult if not impossible. Asking for help is so hard because you're so used to fixing everything yourself.

I utilize an eclectic approach to therapy, including person-centered, cognitive behavioral, and dialectical behavioral therapy to support my clients through treatment.
My approach to treatment varies based on the personalities and needs of my clients. I believe it’s important to take into consideration the unique nature and intersectionality of each individual to provide the best treatment. Although I have an eclectic approach, I often utilize trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, CBT, and DBT.

I’m a caring and pragmatic clinician interested in assisting you in getting to the ‘Point B’ that you’re hoping to reach. This could be: getting in touch with a sense of hope and the resilience you may not know you possess, helping you manage stress, or navigating towards actualizing a goal you’ve been putting off, but know will improve your life.

I believe it takes bravery to recognize when we need help, and even more to seek it out. Many are struggling with depression, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, trauma, or even parenting. I want you to know that you are not alone and seeking support is ok. Anxiety, Depression, and even Trauma may not look the same for everyone. After all, like Carl Rogers stated, "The shoe that fits one person may pinch another. " You may even appear motivated, determined, and happy from the outside, but your loud inner critic tells you that you are not good enough, constantly compares yourself to others, is stress, and possibly feeling hopeless.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists
Who is DBT for?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?
The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?
Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?
Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
