There are many paths up the mountain. I believe that each individual is as unique as the pathway they select in life. On every path there are difficult challenges that bring questions. Why do I feel this way? What am I missing? Is what I'm feeling a mental illness? Is my brain functioning properly? Do I need professional help?

I believe that relationships are the cornerstone to mental wellness. They are the greatest source of pain, growth and healing. Because of this, I see my role as a therapist as an active relational partner in a client’s process toward change. I hold genuine curiosity that drives me to dive deep into each client on a fundamental level. I hold strong value for each person’s story and I have found that telling your story is often where healing begins. I strive to create a safe space that invites you to face the dark places of your story, to highlight your resilience and cultivate empowerment.

I work primarily with children, teens, and adults who have suffered traumatic events. I provide an outlet without judgement, helping clients work through unresolved feelings about past childhood trauma, family conflict, and broken relationships, which can cause significant distress, affecting other parts of their lives. I will help you break away from anything that is holding you back from being the person you truly desire to be. My style is eclectic, supporting individual needs, unlocking and developing each person's potential. With children and teens, I use Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to assist clients in overcoming negative effects of the traumatic experience.

You may have experienced a loss, a trauma, a transition, or an unexpected life upheaval. My job is to walk with you in the darkness and shine a light, so we may find the way through together. Whether you are seeking an assessment for diagnostic questions, or a longer therapeutic relationship to allow deeper self-exploration, I am happy to join you in the work. On the outside it seems like you have everything together, but inside you feel unhappy and stuck. Instead of thriving, you are overwhelmed and exhausted. Part of you feels like you just can't manage it all. You spend your days feeling sad, irritated, and afraid. You wonder if you have the ability to heal and move through the obstacles in your way. Maybe you've experienced a trauma and you feel like you can't move forward in your relationships.

We are meant to work together if you are in one of the following categories: 1.) The Frustrated Adult fed up with continuing to hold yourself back from improving your life. Your mind gets in your way of believing you can create a more fulfilling and satisfying existence, and your behavior stays the same. Or, 2.) The Couple who loves each other & wants to finally ACT like they love each other, and stop the awful cycle they’ve been stuck in for years. An endless feedback loop of the same infuriating fights and seemingly hopeless & tiring perpetual problems keep invading your love and joy.

Each person is unique and has experienced their own set of challenges, trauma and adversities yet we are all bound by human commonalities. We get hurt, we feel anxious or depressed, we feel anger and we can feel hopeless. If you want to find joy, meaning or take control over your life, I am here to help guide you and provide you support. I am here to acknowledge the pain while finding things that bring happiness. We all need a safe place to get support when we are struggling to find our voice, figuring out how communicate ours needs or dealing with the emotional pain caused by everyday stressors, trauma or relationship issues.

The work you and I will do together is focused on your goals and needs and capitalizes on your strengths. My assessment process takes into account the biological, psychological, social, emotional, spiritual, and cultural aspects of your life. Once that assessment is completed, you and I will explore the issues and needs that you are trying to manage by utilizing a "motivational interviewing" approach. We then work to discover the maladaptive behaviors and coping mechanisms; and explore healthy, productive, and strengths-based strategies for getting these needs met.

My specialty areas have varied over the years including codependency, sexual abuse , depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, grief, play therapy and sandtray.
"I believe that each person has unlimited potential within themself! It is my role to assist a person in finding the answers to the dilemnas' they may be facing. Often someone is experiencing a high level of stress through a current life circumstance that brings up feelings or grief from the past. When this happens, part of the therapy process is to deal with the "unfinished business" to access more energy to bring to the present. As a Marriage and Family therapist, I focus on relationship issues including patterns of communication that can improve to develop more satisfying relationships too.

The decision to look for a therapist takes strength and courage. Therapy is a resource that promotes healing and growth; and as amazing as that is, it can also be intimidating. The heart of the work we will do together centers around supporting you to heal, work towards changing your thought process and to help you develop skills to work through challenging life situations. I use a combination of therapeutic techniques to help support you to identify and process through areas that you feel are impacted negatively. Working together, I will support you towards healing and empower and guide you to move forward in a healthier way.

I enjoy connecting with couples, teens, and young adults seeking to find relief and healing from disconnection and emotional distress. My approach to therapy is attachment based and I often use expressive arts and somatic therapies. With couples, I offer a supportive and compassionate environment where couples can safely explore their feelings and connect with one another on a deeper level, leading to a secure attachment bond. My passion is to help you reconnect with your full self and to heal on a deeper level so that you may move through the world with a strong sense of internal safety, belonging, and dignity.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
