I believe all individuals want to be the best version of themselves, but they need some guidance and tools to accomplish this. I have been in practice for 30+ years. My professional and life experience have given me a rich understanding of the majority of struggles individuals experience for which they seek help. I utilize a variety of approaches to help clients reach their mental health objectives, including, though not limited to, EMDR (to assist with trauma), family systems, person-centered, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I meet each person "where they are".

I am often asked: “What is the focus and specialty of your psychotherapy practice?” And my sincere, honest answer is that “people are people, and pain is pain; and to the best of my ability, I listen and try to understand past and present circumstances that brought you to therapy.” Some of the reasons that brought you to therapy you already know. But some aspects of that pain are hidden and not yet known, what psychoanalysis describes as the unconscious. This unconscious pain, thoughts, beliefs show themselves in dreams and fantasies and in your daily life. Understanding them will enrich your self-understanding.

Hi there, I'm Mariam! I am a licensed Psychologist. Through my clinical work, I aim to help people feel more like themselves again... especially when life feels heavy or disconnected. I’m drawn to exploring the deeper layers of what people carry, how past experiences shape how we see ourselves, and how we move through the world. In our work together, my goal is to offer a space where you can be real, feel understood, and start making sense of things at your own pace. You don’t have to have it all figured out (none of us do), but you can pick up the momentum that will make that meaningful difference!

We assist clients in developing a clinical understanding of their emotions/behaviors in the context of their relationships with others. Assisting clients to understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings and responses helps them gain control over themselves and their environment. When life happens, and we are in the midst of chaos, our brain gets stuck and begins to believe that there are no options available; but sometimes we need a push, an emotional support, or just someone to talk to, to help us un-knot the chaos in our mind with the essential problem-solving skills that we need to manage our lives properly.

As a therapist, I believe that healing begins with understanding the full context of who we are—our cultures, identities, and lived experiences. I approach therapy through an intersectional and culturally responsive lens, recognizing how overlapping identities shape our challenges and strengths.
In my work, I take a collaborative approach, partnering with clients and their support systems to foster meaningful and sustainable growth. My goal is to create an environment of trust, safety, and comfort, where you feel seen and supported as you explore your personal goals.

Seeking for emotional support can be intimidating. It may especially be difficult if you are coming from a culture where addressing mental illness is still stigmatized and can be perceived as “bringing shame to the family”. As a Filipino American, I want to help transform the view of psychotherapy in my community (as well as in other communities). I want to be able to assure individuals that it is alright to reach out to a professional to share what they are going through. To encourage the utilization of such resources in able to feel more empowered.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?
Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.
How long does psychodynamic therapy last?
Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.
Does psychodynamic therapy work?
Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.
What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?
Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
