EMDR and TRM help you process both the traumas from your work and the old traumas that have hung around too long, holding you back from living the life you really want.
Skilled counseling for first responders & therapists. I help the helpers, like you. Whether you sit with clients all day or are helping people in medical emergencies, your work is hard to leave at work. First responders: your jobs are so high-pressure that most people can’t imagine what you see and do in a day. The shifts are long & hard, your sleep is out of whack, and your spouse complains that you’re more distant and moody all the time. You haven’t felt like yourself in a while, and “sucking it up” is sucking the life out of you. You miss that easygoing person you used to be...and you want to feel in control of your life again.

All of a sudden you remember that you have to do this. That thing that is so important to get to, that you have yet to do. The thing that you don’t really want to do. If only you could put it off your head. So now you’re keeping yourself busy to avoid doing it. But the more you avoid doing it the worst you feel. Why can’t you just make yourself do it! And just like that you’re on edge again. The uneasiness will follow all day long now. Then the negative thoughts come. “Everyone will know” “I cannot fail” “What is wrong with me”. The more you think about it, the worst it gets, the worst you feel. You used to handle it on your own.

As an inclusive, trauma-focused therapist, trained in EMDR and DBT, I provide culturally affirming therapy to all adults.
Do you wonder why you have a big reaction to the small things in life? Seeking therapy, whether for the first time or the tenth time, takes courage and strength. I have heard from clients that even with cognitive insight they have remained stuck in distressing feelings/situations. I strongly believe that living coping skill to coping skill is not a viable long-term solution. Through personal experience, I have ascertained that knowledge of the root cause to a reaction or behavior is paramount to healing. I will not see you as a compilation of symptoms or a diagnosis, but rather as a person with needs that you are trying to get met.

Hello, my name is Maria Culcasi. I have been a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) In California for nearly 20 years. I work with adults who are experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress. I use EMDR and CBT to help clients work through their thoughts and emotions, cope with life's stressors, and find more ease in their life. I typically work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, stress, and current and/ or past trauma. A little bit of stress is a good thing. It gets us out of bed in the morning and motivated to work towards our goals.

My approach combines positive psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, EMDR and depth psychology to explore the unconscious influences.
Even the strongest people need help to work through some of life's more challenging problems. You may have noticed that you have been experiencing problems sleeping, problems in your relationships or problems functioning at work. Everyone has hurdles to overcome that sometimes include being weighed down by self-doubt, shame, worry, loneliness and only seeing what you did wrong. You may ask yourself “how can I continue like this”, well you don’t have to. It is possible to change and love your life.

I use a variety of approaches (CBT, DBT, EMDR and other somatic based) to help clients safely get in touch with their bodies, identify emotions and establish healthy boundaries to function more effectively.
In my practice, I primarily work with people who find themselves off-kilter after giving of themselves to family, relationships, and work, and yet confused about their place in this world. I walk alongside people exploring their cultural, health and spiritual identities to become more whole selves.

EMDR Therapists

Who is EMDR for?

EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.

Why do people need EMDR?

People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.

What problems does EMDR treat?

First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.

What happens in EMDR therapy?

First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
