The concept of "self-improvement" can be empowering, but also intimidating. In a problem-saturated world, it can be easy to define ourselves as our problems, instead of looking at them as operating forces that can then be explored.

I work with people who have spent a lifetime searching for answers to the mismatch between their internal experience and what the world seems to expect from them. In that search, we may have intellectualized our pain, seeking to understand it in order to manage it, then go to therapy (or avoid it) only to have what we already know reflected back to us. I know what it is to live within that that gap, as a parent, as a child, and as a person. How could we be so great at some things, while sometimes we can barely do the basics?

Is this the 100th Psychology Today profile you’ve read in the last hour? Are they all blending together? Or is someone in your life telling you that you need to go to therapy and you have no idea where to begin—or if you even want to? If so, I know exactly what you’re going through. Though it doesn’t feel great, you’re exactly where you need to be. Feeling uncomfortable is a part of the process. I offer a warm, empathic non-judgmental space while also being willing to name what’s happening in the room.

Clients often come to me when they feel stuck—whether they’re navigating mental health challenges like anxiety, ADHD, depression, trauma, or mood disorders, or processing significant life events and transitions. Many times, it’s a mix of both. I’m Dr. AJ Rich, PsyD, LMFT (he/him), but my clients simply call me AJ. I specialize in working with individuals and couples who, from the outside, may seem like they have it all together but inside feel insecure, dissatisfied, or unhappy. You can easily get on my calendar with a few clicks at my website for a free 20-minute consultation.

Some people come to therapy looking for a place to be heard. But what if that isn't enough? Maybe you've been to therapy in the past and aren't sure if it helped. Sessions felt comforting and affirming, but nothing in your life actually shifted. The work never felt totally alive. And now you're here, struggling with the same things as before. I work with people who appear to have it all together yet feel like something essential is missing or broken. They're stuck in patterns they can't think their way out of, unable to access what they actually want, or carrying a sense of shame or wrongness they haven't been able to articulate.

You appear highly capable while internally managing chronic stress, overwhelm, identity-related strain, relational patterns shaped by trauma. The tension and heaviness don't have to dominate your daily experience. It is possible to renew your nervous system, honor the strength it took to survive, and continue into freedom and ease. Therapy with me is structured, attuned, and grounded. We work at a pace your nervous system can tolerate, with attention to boundaries, consent, and practical integration. My role is to help you develop greater internal stability, choice, and self-trust.

I believe therapy works best when you feel genuinely seen, respected, and met with care. My style is warm, collaborative, and deeply relational. Many of the people I work with are thoughtful and self-aware, yet feel stuck in patterns shaped by trauma, C-PTSD, anxiety, depression, or relationship struggles. Together, we gently untangle what’s underneath and support meaningful, transformational trauma healing—working not just with insight, but with your nervous system, attachment patterns, and deeper emotional wounds at a pace that feels safe.

I believe the most important relationship we will ever have is the relationship we have with ourselves. We live in our bodies and our minds 24/7 and are so often at odds with what is inside of us. We dislike, belittle, cajole, judge, and hold ourselves up to rigid standards...and all within our own private universe. How we relate to ourselves will determine how we relate to our partners, others, as well as to environmental issues, and, ultimately, will determine how happy we are.

Starting therapy can come from many places—feeling overwhelmed, navigating change or loss, or wanting a deeper understanding of yourself. Whatever brings you here, you don’t have to figure it out alone. I’m here to support you in working through what you’re going through to help you feel more like yourself again. I work with adults and teens navigating anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, life transitions, and recovering from trauma. My work often includes exploring how your identity and challenges can be shaped by childhood experiences, culture, family, and intergenerational patterns.

No matter how dark things appear right now or how great the pain, I believe there is hope. Life can throw some crazy curve balls. I know how earth-shattering crisis can be. You may feel too weary to deal with what is happening (or may be tired of always having to be so strong), but sometimes transformation can happen just by holding on. I would like to be the person who supports you in hanging on, even if the rope seems to be slipping through your fingers. So if you feel like giving up, give me a call instead.

My background includes working with young adults, students, trauma survivors, individuals with addiction, BIPOC, and older adults.
Do you ever feel like you’re constantly questioning whether you’re “good enough,” even after working so hard to get where you are? Maybe you overthink every decision, and say yes when you want to say no. If you’re navigating imposter syndrome, people-pleasing patterns, or the pressure of balancing cultural expectations with your own identity, I hear you. As a second-generation AAPI woman, I understand the unique pressures that come with navigating cultural identities, family expectations, and the feeling of being “in between” worlds.

I have worked in outpatient hospital settings, community mental health, in-home crisis services, and private practice assisting those who struggle with depression, and anxiety, and survivors of childhood abuse and sexual assault. I believe that developing a therapeutic relationship and holding an authentic space for clients is a top priority. Life can be challenging and walking alone through it can be scary. I feel it is an honor to work alongside clients and walk with them through their path of healing.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
