Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and you might be wondering if it will really help, if your struggles are “enough,” or if you’ll find someone who truly gets you. I work with women and girls of all ages who are carrying stress, self-doubt, or the weight of past experiences, and are looking for a safe place to sort through it all. Are you a young adult (18-35) feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or unsure about what comes next? You might be constantly second guessing yourself, comparing your path to everyone else's, or wondering if you're "doing it wrong". Life transitions—like starting or finishing college, changing careers, or navigating relationships—can feel like a lot to handle. Maybe you’re stuck in self-doubt, struggling with imposter syndrome, or feeling like anxiety is calling the shots. Perhaps you’re grieving a past version of yourself or the life you once imagined. Whatever it is that brings you to therapy, I can help you navigate through the chaos.

Sometimes, we can feel, think, and act in ways that we don't recognize or that feel at odds with who we are. We may feel lost and disoriented, unsure how we got here and trying to get our bearings. We can ask ourselves questions like, why am I so angry right now? Why do I feel like I can't breathe? Why is my body so tired? Why don't I care about anything? What is wrong with me? We may feel stuck and exhausted, physically and emotionally. If this sounds like you, you are not alone, and I am so glad you are here. We can work together to find the way back to you.

When you, or your family are ready for change (or wish you were ready for change), I would like to provide psychotherapy assistance to you with compassion and motivation. Many clients seek me out due to my background with EMDR, trauma resolution, PTSD, couples counseling, personal growth, life transitions, 12 Step Recovery, anxiety, depression, parenting and relationship challenges. Trauma resolution is my greatest interest, and I am still amazed at how fragile/yet strong each of us are. Many students with ADHD or executive function challenges feel stuck, even though they’re bright and capable. Tasks feel overwhelming, and procrastination or perfectionism can make it hard to start or finish work, leading to stress and frustration. They want practical strategies that work with their brain, along with support to create organizational systems, manage their time, and build confidence. With ADHD and EF coaching, students can take action, follow through, and complete their educational goals.

Do you feel like past wounds are preventing you from moving forward? Perhaps you have a difficult time understanding why you continue to repeat unhealthy behaviors or feel ashamed for not living up to your own or others' expectations. You probably feel a mixture of emotions: motivated to change, but afraid of feeling uncomfortable and vulnerable. Maybe you doubt your ability to change or question if talking about painful issues can actually help you feel better. Having these thoughts and feelings is a normal part of the growth process.

Female Therapists

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or because they feel more comfortable with a therapist of their own gender due to shared life experiences or perspectives. Considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender may matter or improve their therapeutic experience. The most important consideration is that a client is able to build a trusting relationship with their therapist.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist. For women, this could be because they believe that they will be able to better connect with a woman, and that a female therapist will be able to relate to their specific challenges and personal issues. It may be particularly beneficial for women to see a female therapist, for example, for gender-specific issues, such as sexism in the workplace, relationship issues, and gender roles. The most important factor in therapy is the client-therapist connection, and a therapist's gender as well as many other factors may play an important role in this.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
