I work from a psychodynamic /depth perspective in dealing with both couples and individuals, and tailor treatment to individual needs.
I am a Marriage and Family Therapist and am also certified as a Psychoanalyst. I am thus trained on two fronts: both with difficulties inherent in couples relationships--including communication, anger, betrayal, and pre- and post-marital problems--and also with individual personal difficulties including depression, anxiety, fears, and addictions. Most emotional problems have their basis in current or past personal relationships. Good therapy involves a clear understanding and honoring of the many complex issues involved. I deeply respect the emotional struggles and the difficult decisions which bring many people to therapy.

I use the following therapeutic approaches: Internal Family Systems, Relational Cultural and Psychodynamic Theories, along with CBT and Mindfulness to help you identify problematic patterns and make meaningful change.
Change can be difficult, even with something you looked forward to such as going to college, having a baby, or starting a new job. Unanticipated or unwanted change can be especially difficult, like the loss of a loved one, a relationship ending, or watching your child or young adult struggle. My approach to therapy combines warmth and compassion with practical problem solving and coping strategies.

Sometimes we feel off. We know ourselves well enough to know “something needs to change,” but progress feels unclear or scary and we get stuck. There can be no change without awareness. I view therapy as a tool for just that: increased understanding of our inner and outer worlds. I primarily use a psychodynamic approach to guide exploration and confront the realities that inform you and that may be holding you back. We’ll start with clarity about what those are. With compassion and great care for safety we’ll continue to uncover your personal strengths that equip you with the self-confidence to navigate your life and relationships.

I specialize in spiritual and depth psychology and utilize a multi-theoretical framework that incorporates feminist, humanistic, existential, somatic, internal family systems, mindfulness, gestalt, psychodynamic , and attachment-based approaches.
My passion lies in supporting those of all ages and identity backgrounds who are interested in self exploration and discovery. I practice from a trauma informed, sex-positive, queer affirming, feminist, spiritual and social justice-oriented standpoint. Understanding how the “personal is political” and how psychological challenges are rooted in systemic oppression is central to my work. My experience in sexual/reproductive healthcare and working as a birth and postpartum doula catalyzed my interest in supporting those undergoing vulnerability regarding their sexuality, pain, pleasure, health, gender identity and life transitions.

I practice from a psychodynamic and family systems perspective while trained to integrate other modalities as needed.
I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist in private practice for over 25 years. I have fulfilled licensing and educational requirements in two states. My training is with adults across the life span and couples. Previous experience includes university counseling centers and hospital medical consult. It is within our early experiences that we learn trust, acceptance and a sense of self. Each individual learns a unique attachment style based on these early relationships, loves and losses. Therapy provides a safe environment to change patterns, heal our past and present struggles while increasing personal insight, trust and resiliency.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and trauma-focused psychotherapies are among the modalities in which I am proficient.
As a warm and collaborative therapist, my primary role is to create and hold space for you to explore the areas in your life that you want to grow in, that may be causing pain or distress, or that you are simply curious about exploring. A hallmark of my practice is helping my clients move from a place of survival to a place of thriving. A collaborative partnership is the key means by which I will achieve this. I have found that long-term improvement occurs when my clients participate actively in their treatment. When it comes to treatment, I adopt a holistic, eclectic approach.

My orientation combines both psychodynamic and cognitive based approaches.
My clients come from many walks of life but have one thing in common - they would like to improve their overall quality of life. Perhaps the wounds from their past or stressors from their present are adversely impacting their lives. My goal is to work collaboratively with my clients to improve their current level of functioning. My practice includes working with adults, college students, adolescents, couples, and families. I also co-lead groups with my husband who is also a psychotherapist, and I work with master's level and doctorate interns who are completing their therapy/supervison hours for licensing.

Combining existential and psychodynamic approaches is controversial.
I mainly work with clients who are "psychologically minded" and interested in examining long-standing personality traits that may get in the way of having fulfilling personal and professional lives. Often my clients are therapists or aspiring therapists. I am an Emeritus Professor and a "Research Psychoanalyst." That means I have a PhD in Philosophy and have also trained in counseling and acquired a PsyD in Psychoanalysis. What I offer draws from this mix of backgrounds. I most like working with individuals (and couples and groups) who want to be challenged on both an intellectual and an emotional level.

Psychodynamic Therapists
Psychodynamic therapy, also known as insight-oriented therapy, evolved from Freudian psychoanalysis. Like adherents of psychoanalysis, psychodynamic therapists believe that bringing the unconscious into conscious awareness promotes insight and resolves conflict. But psychodynamic therapy is briefer and less intensive than psychoanalysis and also focuses on the relationship between the therapist and the client, as a way to learn about how the client relates to everyone in their life.
