He who looks outside himself dreams. He who looks inside himself awakens. – Jung. People will often feel overwhelmed by what is going on with their lives. You do not have to suffer silently in this experience alone. Let’s work together and understand where you are at and what you are going through both to understand your psychological environment, remove the obstacles before you and let the healing begin.

My graduate work included psychodynamic and neuropsychological training.
I typically treat patients with long-standing difficulties in their life. They have usually made numerous attempts to resolve internal distress and conflict in relationships with varying degrees of success. The type of therapy I offer is intensive and seeks to provide the patient with the tools to understand their pattern of behavior, decrease emotional distress, manage conflict, and adopt realistic expectations for themselves and others.

I work with individuals, mutually-invested couples, and families from a predominately narrative, existential and psychodynamic framework.
Beginning therapy can bring about numerous feelings and expectations. I enjoy hearing the unique worldviews that my clients experience life from. I believe the lives we live are fluid in their meaning, and we are the authors of the stories we live. I enjoy working with clients of all ages and backgrounds, but particularly enjoy working with teens, young adults, adults and families who are living through substantial life changes and transitions in the areas of school, work, and relationships.

Every person has their own reasons for seeking therapy. Some choose it during a period of major life transitions or hardships, while others may seek out therapy in order to deepen their understanding of themselves. By using a psychodynamic and object relations model I am able to consider the whole person rather than pure symptom reduction. I believe there is both conscious and unconscious meaning to symptoms.

My approach to therapy is typically long-term, client-focused, and combines elements of attachment, existential, and psychodynamic therapies, and works to find the best possible method to help the client meet their own needs – usually with stories, humor, and empathic understanding.
What's up! I'm passionate about working with young adults and individuals who are going through changes: sorting out their identity, new job/college experiences, or shifts in relationship or religious beliefs. I also work with those who've experienced religious trauma, had adverse religious experiences, or experienced spiritual abuse. I won't ask clients to go where I haven't been myself: I've been doing my own healing in these areas over the years as well. It’s such an honor to work with courageous people who want to figure themselves out, so they can figure out where they'd like to go!

I am a traditional psychodynamic therapist in that I consider both conscious, rational expression and the unconsious needs and conflicts of my clients.
I believe in the human capacity to heal, accept, love, and grow from our life experiences. Our most treasured beliefs and relationships help us through the pain and difficult times in life. I believe there is no point so low from which we cannot only recover, but gain wisdom and strength as well. Therefore, I focus my treatment style on emotional and character growth, rather than simple symptom reduction.

Psychodynamic Therapists

Is psychodynamic therapy evidence-based?

Studies have found psychodynamic therapy to be effective in treating conditions like social anxiety, eating disorders, chronic pain, some personality disorders, and depression; indeed, some studies have found it to be just as effective as CBT or medication. What’s more, several studies have found that the benefits of psychodynamic therapy tend to endure—even grow—long after treatment has ended.

How long does psychodynamic therapy last?

Unlike CBT and other more structured forms of therapy, psychodynamic therapy tends to be open-ended and may not be limited to a set number of sessions. It is common for clients to be in therapy for a year or longer and to see their therapist one to three times a week, though the exact schedule and timeline may vary depending on a client’s challenges and progress. However, brief psychodynamic therapy is available, which tends to be more goal-oriented and typically unfolds over 16 to 30 sessions.

Does psychodynamic therapy work?

Research finds that psychodynamic therapy can help someone manage or reduce symptoms of diagnosable mental health conditions like depression or anxiety. The modality may also offer a range of benefits that are harder to measure but just as valuable—such as increased self-worth or healthier relationships. While no therapy type will work for everyone, research and anecdotal evidence suggest that psychodynamic therapy can be highly effective.

What are the limitations of psychodynamic therapy?

Some meta-analyses have concluded that there is little evidence to suggest that psychodynamic therapy can effectively treat certain mental health conditions such as PTSD, OCD, or psychosis, though it is sometimes used to do so. More broadly, the open-ended, free-association structure of psychodynamic therapy may be frustrating for clients who prefer a more structured, time-limited, or goal-oriented approach.
