I think that asking for support is pretty courageous and maybe even a little scary. Trusting that someone can be objective and supportive is hard for anyone, but this can be especially hard when something about your life experiences has made it difficult to trust (even) yourself. Maybe you struggle with making decisions. Maybe past or present trauma has left you feeling depressed or anxious or both. Or maybe you don’t know why you feel the way you feel or what causes you to do the things you do. I understand, from a very deep and personal way, what it’s like to feel like you are not the best version of yourself.

I work with teens, families, adults and older adults from multiple cultural backgrounds (special focus on LatinX and Black communities).
When starting treatment, I consider the whole person (i.e. ethnicity, gender, sexuality, age, etc.). This allows us to collaboratively design an individualized therapy plan to help you become your best self. To this end, I generally use a variety of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy interventions.

Hi, I’m Monica. I’m an AMFT at Olive Leaf Family Therapy, working with children, teens, and adults navigating anxiety, grief, trauma, relationship stress, and life transitions. I primarily use Emotionally Focused Therapy—an experiential model grounded in attachment theory and family systems—that centers on the belief that healing happens through connection, both with others and within ourselves. I strive to create a safe, supportive space where you feel seen, accepted, and empowered to explore your story at your own pace.

Hi! I'm Ivy! It's nice to meet you unofficially. It takes a lot of courage to seek help, and I would be honored to help you on your journey to wellness. Each client I have worked with has special strengths that I have used to create a plan to address their concerns. It might be hard to see that you have strengths right now, but I'm confident that I can help you see strengths within yourself. As we move along the healing process and improve areas in our lives, sometimes we may feel challenged or unsure. That's why I'm here.

So you're looking for a therapist? Whether you choose me or somebody else, please keep looking until you have found the right fit-somebody that you connect with and can be yourself around. The biggest hurdle is finding someone you like who also takes your insurance or has a rate you can afford. It's okay if you don't know what your goals are (for therapy or for life)... or if you're unsure if therapy will even be helpful. I love working with clients who feel stuck or "in a rut" or are in between marriages, careers, etc. I have lots of experience in working with teens and adults with addiction, trauma, and mood disorders

There comes a pivotal point in our lives we begin to start questioning our decisions and thoughts, or struggle with the interactions we have in our intimate and platonic relationships. I firmly believe hardships and emotional pain follow us like our own shadow contributing to the way we think, feel, and behave. Do you struggle understanding the WHY? We are born to connect, to be loved, and to be vulnerable! Many issues we experience can stem from early childhood and adolescence, family systems, complex trauma, daily stressors, and life adjustments - often shaping who we are as individuals and how we relate to others.

Taking the first step to begin therapy can be overwhelming and anxiety inducing. We all have times when we need support and reaching out is the beginning of healing. My passion for helping others comes from the healing work of my own trauma and as a PTSD survivor. It has become my goal and purpose to support others in living a happy, full, productive, and healed life. As a trauma-informed therapist, I integrate somatic approaches to support self-empathy and self-acceptance. In addition, I utilize meditation and breathwork to help clients stay centered and mindful of environmental stressors.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
