When a woman discovers her spouse is involved in sexually compulsive behaviors, she often feels as though the floor has fallen out from underneath her. It seems everything she thought she knew about her spouse and her life is suddenly a lie. She feels the deepest sense of betrayal, and wonders if she will ever trust again. Her world is falling apart and there is nothing to hold onto. She feels all alone and often does not tell another living soul about the horror she has been plunged into.

One of my specialties is working with individuals and families that have been affected by addiction(s) in the family. Without judgement and with an atmosphere of safety we begin to explore the process of addiction and family dysfunction that can tear a person, family and community apart. Learning to use recovery tools to help the person and family cope with the stresses of daily life allows the healing process more room to breathe as clients refocus their energies on stability, balance and reconnecting relationships. cash only. no insurance.

Whatever it is that brought your here, whether it is a personal crisis, long term wounds of trauma, or the disappointment of a life not fully lived. You are not alone. These are the very human concerns that we all share. Along with a desire to heal into greater fullness, authenticity, creativity and more meaningful connection with ourselves and others. I believe that we all know what want most deeply - and even, how to get there. But we are blocked by limiting beliefs about ourselves, often from the past.

When you are searching for a therapist the many choices may be confusing. There are so many different ways to describe a safe place where one can explore options, learn to communicate more effectively, debrief from previous hurts, exploitations or resolve a current crisis. Achieving a higher standard of life through self awareness and for some, banishing the self talk of shame and low self esteem which brings many to seek help. As your therapist, I incorporate my own personal work, training and supervison and above all, the experience of working with clients for the past 30 years.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
