Art Therapy in Fairfax, CA
Prioritizing and fortifying emotional health may be one of the most critical aspects of a successful life. Therapy provides the ideal opportunity to allow us to work on identifying the patterns that need to shift to help us achieve this success. Once we begin to strengthen self awareness we can let go of maladaptive patterns and begin to heal and find a deeper satisfaction in life. That is what I help clients do. As a licensed therapist, I have been dedicated to helping individuals, including teens, families, young adults, and couples on their own transformative journey since 2002. I truly value my work!

Let's slow down together and reconnect with the inner resources that support healing, growth, and meaningful change. I offer a compassionate, collaborative space grounded in Internal Family Systems (IFS), somatic therapy, depth psychology and expressive arts, inviting you to listen deeply to your body, emotions, imagination, and inner world. Together we cultivate curiosity, courage, and presence so that even the most vulnerable parts of you can be met with acceptance, restoring trust where it has been lost. Rather than trying to fix what may feel broken, we create the conditions for healing to unfold naturally from within.

I specialize in working with teens and adults who struggle to find purpose, motivation, and self acceptance. Often, clients I work with identify as misfits, and have histories of depression and anxiety that can be alienating in their relationships. I work best with clients who are invested in the process of self exploration through relational work and through their own creativity. I try to help my clients find resources within their own strengths, while seeking to understand the ways that trauma and systems impact their daily, relational lives. While I work well with the queer community, I am open to clients of all identities.

I support individuals navigating grief, loss, major life transitions, aging, dementia (self or a loved one), end-of-life concerns, and the challenges of “adulting.” I support queer individuals and men (of all sexualities and gender expressions) seeking more authentic lives beyond inherited cultural expectations. I aim to offer a grounded presence and try to create a space for honest reflection and vulnerability.
As a dancer, I bring a somatic body-focused lens to our sessions and integrate drama therapy techniques to help interrupt stuck patterns. We work to reconnect with the wisdom of your body and deeper wisdom.

My name is Alexander Warnow and I'm the founder of XY Counseling. At XY we work primarily with adults and couples helping them to live more fulfilling, connected lives. Often what brings someone to seek therapy is a chronic issue that has reached a crisis point: anger, depression, anxiety, self-worth, intimacy problems, communication issues and many more. Sometimes it is a recent change in one's life: infidelity, a move, or the end of a relationship. Taking the risk to ask for help is the first step on the road towards healing and growth.

A number of challenges bring people to therapy. Sometimes it’s simply the desire to feel better. Some clients are looking more from their relationships, their lives, and themselves. Others struggle to deal with or accept circumstances or changes they didn’t want. I specialize in helping people who are unsatisfied with their relationships, whether by continuing to repeat the same unsatisfying patterns or struggling to find a relationship. I also work with those who use food, drugs, alcohol, or other stimuli to numb themselves to difficult feelings. I also help anyone who needs support to manage a life transition.

Dreams, art, play, and imagination are all natives of this realm
What lies below? Buried treasure we had to disown. Self-abandoning defense mechanisms are only the ancient protectors who shut us down to help us survive our early challenges. Befriending these now useless warriors through deep empathic engagement can free us to reclaim demonized parts of ourselves. The creative process can liberate us.

My approach is based in science, incorporating the body and nervous system into the therapeutic conversation, but it is elevated by art.
I'm a woman in my 50s, tough yet tender, with a wealth of lived experience. I provide a safe environment that invites humor and warmth. My clinical work is integrative and intuitive and draws on years of study in spiritual, philosophical, and somatic modalities.

While I address many personal and situational challenges, my approach is especially suited for Dementia and forgetfulness, ADHD, procrastination, work-related lack of clarity, relationship dissatisfaction and existential anxiety. Rooted in contemplative psychology and meditation, my work includes 1. virtual sessions focused on creative self-observation, and 2. Somatic manual work for bodily relaxation and awareness when appropriate. I work with people who want to learn what it means to be one with their experience. I sometimes pick up where other psychotherapists may have left off: focussing on the FlOW of the everyday life.

Art Therapy
How does art therapy work?
The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.
Does art therapy help with trauma?
Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.
How long does art therapy last?
The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.
What are the limitations of art therapy?
Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
