I have provided individual, couple and family therapy to the community for 25 years and strongly believe that healing and growth is possible. Particular specialties include couple and family therapy including LGBT, anxiety, addiction, grief, and trauma. I utilize both traditional therapy and
EMDR
(for trauma). We all have past hurts and traumas. Until healed these impact our current relationships and
EMDR
is a quicker treatment with lasting results.

EMDR
, Internal Family Systems, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.
Are you seeking more connection within yourself and in your relationships, but you are often feeling disconnected and confused about what’s going wrong? Perhaps you struggle to feel secure with your partner or in your friendships and you experience feelings of hopelessness or worry that make daily life a struggle. Peace may seem far away, but it is possible to reconnect, and for those of us who have never known safe, authentic connection, it is possible to connect for the very first time.

There are times in our lives when we feel like things are falling apart. But what if they were actually falling into place? In a safe and caring space, and with compassion and grace, we could explore those areas of your life that have made it difficult (and sometimes impossible) to experience hope, peace, or purpose. Whether we go on a journey to explore your past to heal wounds or remain focused in the present, together we can discover the path forward.

Also, I have been trained in two different methods of trauma therapy,
EMDR
and Somatic Psychotherapy, which are also helpful for those with high anxiety.
Do you find yourself back in the same negative situations with the same kind of people, over and over? Are you a 'people pleaser'? Do you take care of everyone else first? I often work with individuals, couples or families that struggle with saying 'no' and setting healthy boundaries. The people I work with generally want to feel more in control of their lives, learn to manage emotions effectively and have better relationships. With teenagers and young adults, I work together with them to bring balance into their lives, specifically because there are currently too many stressors for young people.

I do this via
EMDR
and traditional talk therapy techniques.
You've been doing all the right things. You are a good friend, you work hard, you love deeply, and sometimes things feel like they run along smoothly while other times it all falls to pieces and you feel like nothing you do is right. You don't really want to throw your hands in the air and quit, but now and then the fantasy of running off to a tropical island and starting over sounds luxurious and relieving. There's hope! You CAN have the peaceful life you dream about right here in this life that you're currently living without throwing in the towel.

While I provide traditional talk therapy, I am certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (
EMDR
), an alternative way to address distressing and traumatic memories.
If you’ve landed here, you are no doubt considering making some changes in your life and I'm glad to see that you are exploring your options for feeling better. People I work with typically feel worried, sad, overwhelmed or stressed, or are trying to cope with grief--before, during, or after--an important loss. Feeling stuck in old ways of thinking and behaving, having problematic relationships, or feeling uncomfortable with the status quo and wanting to improve one's quality of life are common themes that bring people to my office.

Who is EMDR for?
EMDR was initially developed as a treatment for individuals with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), for whom memories of a deeply distressing experience can be inadvertently triggered by random everyday events. The procedure has since been applied in the treatment of many other conditions. For example, it is used by some therapists to treat anxiety disorders including panic and phobias, depression, dissociative disorders, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and some personality disorders. It is suitable for adolescents and adults.
Why do people need EMDR?
People need EMDR as a way to manage distressing memories that in some way hamper the ability to function in the present. The procedure is believed to target the way memories are stored in the brain. Evidence indicates that past disturbing experiences cause ongoing distress because they were not adequately processed, and when such memories are triggered in the present, they are accompanied by all the emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations as the initial experience.
What problems does EMDR treat?
First and foremost, EMDR is intended as a treatment for PTSD, to defuse distressing memories that intrude on and impair everyday functioning. It is also often used to help those who are subject to panic attacks, phobias, and other forms of anxiety. In addition, EMDR has been used to treat individuals with depression, eating disorders, and personality disorders.
What happens in EMDR therapy?
First the therapist takes an individual’s history, and then the therapist and client decide which distressing experience(s) will be the target(s) of the exercise, delivered via a side-to-side visual stimulus requiring lateral eye movements. The client will be asked to activate thoughts, feelings, and any body sensations related to the troubling experience. The eye movements are said to reduce the emotional charge of the memory, so that the experience can then be safely discussed with the therapist and digested, minimizing its ability to trigger anxiety.
