Parents, do you have a child or
teen
that could use some support, perhaps with a divorce or recent trauma? I use art, storytelling, sandplay, and games to help your child or
teen
work through emotional and behavioral issues.
I often work with people with eating disorders, trauma, children and adolescents. Are you tired of restricting, purging, bingeing, and obsessing about food? I can help you stop. We'll develop a treatment team to help you say good-bye to your eating disorder behaviors.

I provide a supportive therapeutic relationship and skillful psychotherapy. I can help with a range of concerns that people bring to therapy. These include improving relationships, working through difficult feelings, managing anxiety, changing troubling behaviors, strengthening a sense of identity and purpose, or improving ones ability to cope with difficult circumstances. I work with
teen
and adult clients; individuals, couples, and families. Along with talk therapy, when appropriate I enjoy incorporating non-verbal forms of expression such as drawing and sand tray work.

My goal is to help people connect with themselves and others in meaningful and satisfying ways. Connection with the self allows acceptance and enjoyment of life without fear, suspicion, self-judgment, etc., which can prevent us from living life to its fullest. Connection with others allows us to "double our joy and divide our grief."
Addressing issues such as depression, self-esteem, or anger can enhance our abilities to know ourselves and be fully present with others. I use an eclectic therapeutic style so that the work can be tailored to fit each client in each session.

Anxiety has left you not wanting to get out of bed some days. You feel weighted down or always on edge, worried about every next thing and you don't know if you can cope with any of it. Things have happened in your past, there's been hurt and traumatic events and they seem to have a lasting impact for you, your family, and those you care about. You long to feel close and comfortable with those you care about. But everything that's happened in the past doesn't allow for the ease of connection you desire.

Are you tired of running away from your fears and missing out on opportunities for growth? You have all the answers inside you. My role is to walk alongside you on this journey of personal growth to help you find those answers. I can hold the mirror for you to see in those blind spots that are hard for us to see on our own, to help you understand better how you want to help yourself in acceptance or taking action (whichever fits your true self where you are at), and to have the patience and love to be gentle with yourself.

I have been a good fit for individuals looking for a supportive space to address anxiety and depression, needing movement in developing new coping strategies, seeking a deeper level of wellness and balance, or identity development. I have often found that I work well with those who have found therapy unhelpful in the past and are looking to give it another try. I also recognize that counseling is a different experience for those who identify as ADHD or ASD. The neuro-diverse culture is an area that I have experience in and that I find meaningful to work with.

I work well with individuals that have neurological and neurobehavioral issues. As a clinical psychologist and a neuropsychologist, I have expertise in working with clients that have sustained traumatic brain injuries (TBI), have post-concussion syndromes, and/or are experiencing cognitive impairment from dementing conditions. I have decades of experience in working with both adults and children with ADHD, and I conduct unbiased diagnostic evaluations and offer alternative medical treatment options for these individuals. I also work with chronic pain patients and individuals with serious anxiety and panic disorders incorporating biofeedback into my psychotherapy sessions.

I came to Humboldt County in 2001, after completing my psychology degree in Europe and my master's degree in psychotherapy in Syracuse, New York. I have practiced psychotherapy for the last 30 years, and I am familiar with a wide range of issues, situations and diagnosis. Although, I enjoy specific theoretical and practical approaches and models of therapy like CBT, SFBT for treating anxiety, trauma impact and depression symptoms, I clinically focus on what I believe suits best the individual and the situation. I view life as a journey towards betterment of the person and reach for happiness.

The pandemic was hard on all of us. If you feel like you need some support or help to desal the last couple of years, I'm here. We all need help occasionally. Learning how to approach and overcome these challenges shape us and allow us to experience life to the fullest. Therapy allows us to look at where we may be blocked and helps us find our own answers to living an authentic life. I discovered that building a supportive relationship through therapy creates a safe place to explore life issues, understand difficult situations, learn new skills, enrich relationships, and work through situations that lead to a more authentic life.

The clients I work with benefit the most when they embrace the comfort and discomfort that comes with building a therapeutic relationship. Reading all the blurbs is an excellent way to get brief insight into the character of a potential therapist, but whether or not someone will be a good fit is a difficult question with so many options. We know the relationship you build with your therapist is the largest indicator of success. With that in mind, go with your gut! Enjoy the process and embrace the change or help you seek.

I believe the development of a secure and collaborative relationship is the most important aspect of the work I do with clients. Working from a strengths-based and relational perspective in a trauma informed manner, I have experience working with at-risk youth, families, and adults using a multi-theoretical approach including Attachment theory, Cognitive-Behavioral, Family Systems, Narrative therapy, Internal Family systems, Somatic techniques, and alternative therapies such as art and nature therapy. I love helping youth and adults through change and deep transformation so that they can actualize their goals in life.

We will work together to find ways to meet your needs and work toward your goals, and build from there. Our plan will evolve as we move forward in a collaborative way. It's the middle of the night and you can't sleep. You keep trying to understand why you are so stuck in your life and your relationship. Your partner is asleep in the other room because you are fighting again. You've done so much to try to feel connected but it isn't working. It's so different than what you experience when you are in community, surrounded by people who are vibrant and expansive. Like that time you were at Burning Man and you felt so alive only to come home to a life that feels numb, and disconnected. No matter how many plant medicine ceremonies, books, or courses you do, you still find yourself frustrated.

Teen Therapists
What does therapy for teenagers look like?
When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.
How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?
There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.
How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?
It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.
How do you prepare teens for therapy?
You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
