At Amen Clinics, we offer the highest level of psychiatric care with targeted treatment plans customized to our patient’s specific situation, using the least toxic, most effective methods. We are unique from the way traditional psychiatry is practiced because we look at the organ we treat through the use of SPECT (single-photon emission computed tomography) imaging. All of the practitioners at the nationwide Amen Clinics locations are board certified and have been personally handpicked and trained by Dr. Amen in his method.

During these unusual times we are dealing with an unsettling reality that evokes strong reactions on personal, social and unconscious levels. These unique times require shifts and changes that can be challenging. We are all called to reflect and face deep inner and outer events that are out of our control. Healing adaptation and adjustment can happen on their own. Engaging in our own healing work can provide new state of consciousness, change and growth.

Did you know that there are normal and predictable developmental milestones for all adoptees, birth parents and adoptive parents? Knowing and understanding these can help you navigate life in a more empowered manner. As a member of the adoption constellation, I know from the inside out, the issues facing this population. I have dedicated my life and work as a psychologist, to help educate and heal the lives of all who are affected. Everyone can enjoy a satisfying life of love, work and play. However, we may find ourselves in personal patterns, relationships, or with life issues that keep us from living to our fullest. Though circumstances and illness are difficult, our manner of dealing with them determines whether we are happy or sad, engaged or depressed, relaxed or anxious, and even feeling physically unwell or healthy. Trauma and poor coping are often related to our past desperate attempts to take care of ourselves in difficult situations. Through a passionate, humor-filled, authentic journey we can seek to understand and change your life.

I have been in practice for close to 30 years and work with individuals and couples. I believe that we all develop ways of coping that serve us at some times in our lives and not in others. I can help you identify the patterns of your behavior and the underlying feelings that accompany that behavior. Together we can try to understand and empathize with what brings you to seek help.

Trauma, grief and loss issues compromise the bulk of my client caseload. I find that adults can hold the impact of childhood trauma for years before seeking psychotherapy and often mask their pain with anxiety, depression or compulsive behaviors. My experience is that getting to the hidden pain and strengths that each client carries through his or her daily lives and relationships are the core of healing. There are no quick fixes, but exploring ways to accent life skills, improve self-respect and relationships are keys to building more wholeness in each person's heart, mind, body and spirit. Especially now.

I believe that all people have an innate ability and desire for growth. Some of us just need that someone that they can talk to. Most of us think we are strong enough to be able to work it out on our own. Unfortunately, that is not always true. We tend to be our own worst enemy. Sometimes, a different perspective is all it takes. Many of us live life in accordance to our "belief system". If we carry a negative self view or the world, how can we expect to live life to it's fullest. We are working to heal our inner child through self-compassion, understanding, non-judgement and validation of self and others.

Using a resiliency-focused approach, it doesn’t have to be an ordeal to heal. In fact, neuroscience has shown this is not the best way to work on oneself. Rather, focusing on regulating the nervous system using simple wellness skills and education about the brain and body connection can pave the way toward increased daily well-being as well as lay groundwork for resolving trauma. We can't always prevent stressors, and many of us have been through challenges or traumas in childhood that make it difficult to weather life's changes. Together, we will co-create the best course of treatment to help you live more fully in each moment.

We carry with us stories and patterns that have likely served us in the past, but may no longer serve us. This can exacerbate symptoms of anxiety, depression or other mental health symptoms. Exploring and recognizing, with gentleness, how these patterns have become detrimental, gives us the freedom to choose what themes we insert in our life, and what we no longer have space for. I am excited by the opportunity to explore with individuals and couples the way in which they can increase their intimacy, empowerment, and sense of individuality by exploring and challenging barriers and patterns that limit exploration.

I believe childhood experiences create the template for adult life. Early losses, separations and trauma define the choices of strategies or defenses we use as adults. Pain and suffering can be caused by these early experiences. It is my job as a therapist to join my clients in their journey of discovery of these templates and help them to gain a more fulfilled life. I provide individual, couples and family counseling services in both English and Spanish in a safe, comfortable environment. My approach is tailored to each client, to meet them on their journey of discovery to finding a more fulfilled life.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists
How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?
Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.
Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?
Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.
Are there specific medications for dissociation?
There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.
How often and how long are therapy sessions?
Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
