It's an empathic bond coupled with keen insights that facilitate real change, whether working with couples to learn better communication strategies or with individuals to work through anxiety, depression, or addiction .
My guess is that your most immediate concerns are (1) how do I find the right therapist? and (2) how do I fit therapy into my busy schedule? I get it. I have appointments available evenings and Sundays. I also believe the client has to be confident in the therapist's abilities. In addition to my educational and licensing credentials, I also bring the experience and added credibility of having served as the Clinical Editorial Chair for The Therapist Magazine.

My clients generally fall into two categories. Many clients are functioning just fine in many aspects of their lives but have some trauma/stress, relationship/employment, self esteem issues, substance use or mood/anxiety disorders that just keep them feeling stuck in an unhealthy pattern. There are also those whose lives are crashing down, with little hope that things can get better. There are no issues too big or too small that aren't worth exploring if they are causing distress. Clients come with baggage in search of a lighter load. That is what we work on together.

Trauma, anxiety, and addiction can make you feel stuck. The most important step towards healing is to address the unresolved emotion inside you. Healing requires feelings. Acceptance slowly dissolves pain. When we function from the fear and scarring of our trauma, the cycles continue until we learn how to transmute that energy into love. I apply a Holistic approach that integrates physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual forms of well-being, addressing the “whole” self. Through a holistic framework tailored to your unique needs, the goal is to support you develop a deeper understanding of the self on all these levels.

(Zoom Video sessions available now.) My ideal client: A creative, motivated, and intelligent professional with an obsession, usually drugs/alcohol and/or sex. A higher percentage of creative people struggle with addiction , because they just don't know when to quit! Creatives frequently have low self-esteem, often despite proven success. Using cognitive (CBT) techniques and psychodynamic methods (how events from the past affect the present) I use a pragmatic, individualized approach. I include solution-focused and music/art therapy to help the client gain insight and put the insight to work to achieve realistic goals.

My ideal client is you. My goal of therapy is to meet the client exactly where they are at and collaborate on the clients’ needs and goals. I work with clients to look at their patterns and behaviors by making the unconscious conscious. So much of what a person is struggling with has to do with blind spots and unconsciously learning to live out of habitual maladaptive patterns. Addiction has been a huge part of my career in the addiction field. I look at addiction as an unhealthy and a lot of time detrimental coping mechanisms. I work with clients, no matter what their addiction or lack of addiction , to live a full and happy life.

You don't have to "just learn to manage" mental health. Recovery is possible and many can start living fully, now, despite their symptoms. As a psychologist specializing in anxiety, mood, and addictions, I am experienced in treating panic attacks, social anxiety, generalized Anxiety, OCD, substance use, and PTSD. My style is agenda-driven, warm, and authentic. I have trained and worked at Stanford Medicine, UT Austin, and Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals (Central Texas, Miami, Palo Alto). Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason, “interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
