I have a broad clinical background but have worked the most with trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD),
depression
, anxiety, other mood disorders, adult ADHD, and adjustment concerns.
I work with adults throughout their entire lifespan, ranging from young adults to older adults. I have an informal and energetic approach to therapy, which encourages active collaboration in both treatment planning and therapeutic execution. I like to think of myself as a guide, providing you with new skill as well as a responsive source of objective feedback on how these skills are impacting your overall functioning. I'm just as human as you are and expect to engage in a collaborative process where you find yourself able to open up and give me feedback just as easily as I share feedback and skills with you.

Most of us have struggled at some point with some form of stress, anxiety,
depression
, grief, anger, and various relationships. Obtaining clarity and relief is often achievable much sooner than realized by understanding your current attitudes, beliefs, and experiences utilizing traditional talk therapy along with mindfulness skills. Learning how to obtain a calmer energy more quickly and effectively when stress arises is foundational for our improved moods and relationships.

This is me at the beach with Shannon, our 25 year-old daughter. My wife Vicki and I had the good fortune to raise her here in beautiful San Diego North County, where she has had the opportunity to become an accomplished surfer, sailor, diver, and nature photographer. Vicki and I are a Marriage and Family Therapist team in private practice here for 20+ years in Encinitas, California. As well as seeing couples and families, I have specialized in treating anxiety disorders and phobias,
depression
, alcohol and substance abuse, and adolescents.
I completed my B.A.degree at the University of Connecticut and graduate training at Purdue University. Using an eclectic approach, I combine elements of cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, client-centered and mindfulness therapies in my practice. I am also certified in Clinical Hypnosis for use in weight loss, smoking cessation, habit control and anxiety reduction.
I began focusing on treating adolescents very early in my career, and I have always enjoyed working with their youthful energy. Helping parents to work more closely together and develope simple and effective parenting skills can transform a stressful, contentious family life i

I help women with
depression
, anxiety, and other stressors learn to live free from the control of these conditions.
Are you a woman feeling sad, anxious, or just not yourself? Do you overthink the past? Worry too much about the future? Reach for quick fixes that don’t work? Or do you ignore the problem and tell yourself that eventually, things will change? Your sad thoughts and anxious feelings zap your energy. Unfortunately, your quick fixes only cause more painful struggles, and distancing yourself from the problem only worsens things. There is a reason for your sadness, worry, dependency, and detachment. Reaching out for help is the courageous first step toward finding relief and a solution.

I utilize an integrative approach that is individualized for each client and have focused my work on the treatment of anxiety,
depression
, trauma, life transitions and supporting those within my LGBTQIA+ community.
“A real sign of progress is when we no longer punish ourselves for our imperfections” - Young Pueblo. I believe that oftentimes our perceived “imperfections” hold stories of pain endured, and that acknowledging their existence, instead of hiding them away can be the first step towards healing. This, however, can be one of the most challenging things to do, as it requires unlearning sometimes lifetimes of messaging from the world around us. Issues such as
depression
, anxiety and trauma can cause us to feel off, disjointed and as though we need to “fix” the parts of us we perceive as imperfect.

Is your teen or pre-teen suffering from
depression
or anxiety? Are they struggling in school or with their peer group? Through the use of cognitive behavioral strategies, your child can learn new ways of thinking and coping. Children and teens don't always have the ability, or the words, to share how they are really feeling. Instead it comes out in their behaviors, which often times ends up creating conflict, disharmony and upset. It doesn't have to be this way. Your child and your family can enjoy being together. It is possible to see your child or teen be their best self!

What is the goal of therapy for depression?
Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.
What happens in therapy for depression?
Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.
What therapy types help with depression?
Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.
Can therapy for depression be done online?
Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.
How effective is therapy for depression?
Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
