Psychoanalytic Therapists in Emeryville, CA
I believe that everyone deserves a space without judgement to explore who they are, how they got here and where they want to go. My goal as a therapist is to provide support while helping clients figure out what isn’t working for them in their life or relationships and then work as a team to make changes.

Transformation on a deep level is possible as we grow capacity for curiosity and contact- with our earlier life, with our truest desires, and with honest contemplation of what we have created out of our pain and from our fears.
I work best with folks who have a deep hankering to wake up – to what has been, what is, and what might be.

While psychoanalytic psychotherapy is the basis of all my work I also attend to the immediate and practical challenges of life incorporating many modalities of thinking.
I bring to my work understanding, compassion and extensive training as a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst. I have years of experience working with issues related to addiction; depression and anxiety; trauma; relationship, parenting, and family issues; life transition and questions like "What do I really want?" and "What is important to me?" I believe psychotherapy is a process that offers a way to understand troubling experiences and relationships that result in unhappiness, disappointments, and dissatisfaction, which build up over the course of life. Working with me offers new ways of thinking, feeling and relating.

A significant piece of feedback I get from clients is that they not only look forward to our appointments, but it feels truly conversational and as if talking to a friend. I am not going to be textbooky, instead you are going to get a person who can relate, be real, and also highlight what you're already doing well and ways to tweak towards progress. I am a dedicated ally for the LGBTQ+ community and committed to engaging in open, honest conversations about anti-racism and politics.

I facilitate deep inner healing.
When there's space, time, curiosity and full acceptance from a safe other, what needs to be seen and heard from the depths arises and then guides towards healing, wholeness and connection. The injuries of current and past show up to speak truth and release - interpersonal, familial, intergenerational, and impacts of oppression, discrimination, alienation, abuse, and neglect. When injuries heal, freedom and connection arise, depression and anxiety fall away. This process happens with deep listening, honor, and care. I offer Sacred Ceremony with legal psychedelics to support the unfolding journey.

Hi, my name is Elena Wang. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I believe, the success of therapy greatly depends on the quality of the relationship between the therapist and the patient. I specialize in neurodivergence, and especially love working with late diagnosed autistic individuals. I see many women, non-binary, people of color, and other minority backgrounds who struggle with getting the adequate diagnosis. It's my goal to change that. I am constantly staying up to date with new neurodiversity related findings and frequently exploring new ways to support this community. Mental Health Care has failed neurodiverse folks for too long, it is truly my mission to change that.

Does psychoanalytic therapy work?
Psychoanalytic therapy derives from the work of Sigmund Freud. In this type of therapy, discovering buried thoughts and emotions from the unconscious will help a person work through their difficulties and negative behaviors. Research shows that psychoanalytic therapy can be highly effective, with patients reporting improvement in mood, quality of life, and overall well-being.
How long are people typically in psychoanalytic therapy?
Traditional psychoanalysis is in-depth and is conducted in five sessions every week. Today, modern psychoanalytic therapy is less intense and normally incorporates as few as one or two sessions a week. In some cases, positive change can occur quickly. However, if the condition, difficulty, or behavior is deep-seated, improvement may require many months or years of therapy.
Is psychoanalytic therapy suitable for young people?
Children and adolescents can benefit from this type of therapy. Many kids and teens are often unable to form and communicate their thoughts and emotions. Psychoanalytic therapy uses specific techniques such as dream analysis, symbolism, and free association or word association; all of which can be useful tools for less-communicative young people. Through this therapy, a patient will hopefully make connections between what they feel inside and how the world works outside.
Can psychoanalytic therapy be done online?
Modern-day psychoanalytic therapy is very different from traditional psychoanalysis. While an individual can sit face-to-face with the psychoanalyst for multiple sessions a week, they do not have to. Today, psychoanalytic therapy can be effectively conducted online or by phone. The key is that the individual confronts what is repressed and avoided, and this can be done whether in person or over online video.
