I believe that everyone can heal with the support of therapy. My area of focus the last couple of years has been the treatment of substance use. I typically work with clients who struggle with substance use and are interested in reducing and stopping use. I feel most comfortable treating depression, anxiety, and substance use. I like clear, open communication. I think that when we can be open and honest with ourselves, we can learn the skills to express ourselves with others. I became a therapist because I wanted to help others like I was helped when I came out as queer.

Are you feeling heartbroken or utterly confused by a romantic relationship? Are you a parent who is endlessly stirred up by your child's behavior? I offer an opportunity to utilize heartbreak in service of growth and to begin to untangle the reality of your current relationships from the residue of your history. I challenge parents to advocate for their own needs while also strongly considering the needs of their children. I teach them how to facilitate the full expression of emotion in children. In light of a great deal of training and personal experience I bring a deep respect for the unknown and a willingness to land in mystery.

I see things differently. I see you fully able to achieve your goals. I see you as one who likely needs a non-judgmental place to talk about things: your future goals, how drug/alcohol use, etc fits w/that future, & how you see yourself getting there: abstinence, sober curious. moderation. I'm a collaborator, one who's committed to listening deeply & providing a space to talk about anything, for individuals/families/all. My main focus is on today & tomorrow though we may visit the past as we seek to understand your behavior. Gratefully the science of change & addiction shows there's no one way to recover/change!

Whatever you have lived through--healing is possible. I provide therapy for people living outside of the mainstream, whether because of values and ideals or personal identity. Therapy with me doesn't require that you or I believe there is anything wrong with you. Instead it is a place where we work collaboratively and creatively to develop an environment where you can take more and more risks to be yourself. It is a place to keep growing. It is a place to get real about what matters to you and what challenges you. Keywords: radical, queer, therapy for therapists, artists, activists, social justice.

It can be hard to meaningfully connect with others in today’s fast paced, technologically reliant world. Traumatic experiences may cause one to withdraw and isolate from relationships and the environment, or can possibly lead one to engage in self-destructive behaviors. Therapy is a tool that helps when feeling stuck or overwhelmed, whether those feelings are created from underlying anxiety, depression, trauma, loss/grief, relationship issues, stress, or issues with self-esteem.

I help Bay Area professionals finally release the tension, looping thoughts, and memories that just won’t settle. Because it's not just the job that leaves you feeling drained. Some days it feels like you have to wear a mask from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep. Keeping up appearances, double-checking everything, and carefully managing how others see you is exhausting. The pressure has you feeling anxious, unsure, and worn out. The result is a constant sense of burnout, tension, and overwhelm.

While I also employ the use of a Strengths-based model and collaborative treatment planning, I practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, a structured, effective approach that works with a variety of problems like mood issues, stress, and trauma. I practice Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which allows clients to see and understand connections between their stressful situations, their thoughts and beliefs, and resulting emotional difficulty. The homework is not overly time-consuming and it enhances therapy much like the saying "The more you put into something the more you get out of it."

Mindfulness-Based (MBCT) Therapists

How does mindfulness-based cognitive therapy work?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy originated in the work of John Kabat-Zinn of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He developed mindfulness-based stress reduction, which is a technique found in yoga and meditation. MBCT is a combination of this type of stress reduction and cognitive behavioral therapy; it essentially quiets emotional distress through mindfulness, utilizing proper breathing and meditation. These techniques aim to bring the individual into the present moment when in a state of distress.

When do I know if I need treatment with mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

If an individual’s mind is filled with emotional distress and general negativity, the person may feel trapped. A mindfulness-based cognitive therapist can help a person change their thinking patterns as well as their behavior through calm acceptance and compassion. This therapy can provide an individual with the coping skills needed for a healthier and more constructive life.

What should I expect from mindfulness-based cognitive therapy?

This therapy often takes place in group sessions. A therapist will work with the group as well as with each individual. Meditation and breathing exercises are core practices that aim to invite inquiry and discovery into a person’s troubled mental state. The objective is to identify and lessen negative thoughts and behaviors and move toward optimal health and productivity. The individual will see life in a more realistic way. This therapy is supportive, accepting, and warm.

Is mindfulness-based cognitive therapy effective?

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is evidence-based and effective. One study found that people with major depressive disorder have benefitted from this type of therapy; the person accepts their distressed thoughts and also moves into healthier patterns of thinking. This therapy also aims to move an individual away from automatic negative responses. This type of therapy can bring a person lifelong change, with higher levels of satisfaction, less stress, as well as positive emotional and behavioral habits.
