Men don’t struggle. Men aren’t weak. Men don’t complain. Men aren’t hurt by words. Silence is strength. Real men provide. Real men take it. These are the myths that create an epidemic of male depression, addiction and anxiety.

Transformation on a deep level is possible as we grow capacity for curiosity and contact- with our earlier life, with our truest desires, and with honest contemplation of what we have created out of our pain and from our fears. I work best with folks who have a deep hankering to wake up – to what has been, what is, and what might be.

I'm Sam and I provide therapy for people who struggle with masking, disconnection, and codependency finally change how they relate to themselves and others and come out of emotional hiding. Many of my clients describe living what feels like a double life—"holding it all together" while carrying fear, shame, or worry that everything will fall apart if they stop controlling everything. If old roles or attachment wounds are keeping you stuck, I can help you take off the mask without feeling like everything will fall apart. From that place, life starts to feel more manageable, connected, and sustainable.

I believe that everyone deserves a space without judgement to explore who they are, how they got here and where they want to go. My goal as a therapist is to provide support while helping clients figure out what isn’t working for them in their life or relationships and then work as a team to make changes.

I see things differently. I see you fully able to achieve your goals. I see you as one who likely needs a non-judgmental place to talk about things: your future goals, how drug/alcohol use, etc fits w/that future, & how you see yourself getting there: abstinence, sober curious. moderation. I'm a collaborator, one who's committed to listening deeply & providing a space to talk about anything, for individuals/families/all. My main focus is on today & tomorrow though we may visit the past as we seek to understand your behavior. Gratefully the science of change & addiction shows there's no one way to recover/change!

I choose to use an approach that is respectful, non-blaming, and collaborative. We live our lives through stories. Often times, these stories no longer align with our values and beliefs. This is where problems emerge and attach themselves to our stories. By gaining some distance from the problem, we can begin to change our relationship with the problem and discover preferred ways of being that closely align with our beliefs. I aim to empower my clients by positioning them as experts in their lives in a non-pathologizing, inclusive environment, where the problem is the problem and we together find the solution.

Do you struggle to feel good enough, no matter what you do? You feel the pressure to hold it all together and be perfect, maybe at work or with your family, which often means hiding who you are, what you want and need, in order to meet others' expectations. Sometimes you feel like a kid again, being told you can't do anything right. Your thoughts and emotions feel overwhelming, which makes setting boundaries and communicating your needs feel impossible. Especially with your parents or higher ups. You are also resilient and ready to feel better, stronger, more confident, and excited about your life again.

I believe the capacity to thrive lives in your hands, heart, and imagination. As your therapist, I will work with you to uncover your own inherent wisdom. With your wise self in the room, we can explore how parts of you may feel lost or left out. As your wise self learns to take up more space in your life, you may come to realize that the painful parts of you are just that: a part of you, and that your life is not defined by these parts. I will help you to realize that you are indeed amazing, capable, and loved.

FAQ - About Therapy for Seniors
Is one ever too old for mental health therapy?
Individuals of all ages can benefit from mental health therapy. Indeed, older adults in particular may benefit from the social and psychological support a therapist can provide; the topics that older adults address in therapy may simply differ from those of younger clients. Seniors should seek out a therapist who has experience working with older individuals and who is well-versed in addressing common concerns among elderly individuals, such as depression, anxiety, loneliness, and physical mobility challenges.

How is counseling for seniors and the elderly different from counseling for other age groups?
In general, counseling offers an opportunity for clients to process difficult life events and develop coping skills they can use outside of the therapy session. Therapists who specialize in working with elderly clients generally have the same framework but may place a special emphasis on specific topics, such as caregiver relationships and reducing loneliness. They may be specially equipped to deal with certain physical conditions or facilitate discussion surrounding end-of-life topics. Counseling for the elderly may also place a greater emphasis on social work-type topics to ensure that geriatric clients have access to necessary resources, such as food, a safe home environment, and healthcare.

How can therapy improve the quality of life of aging individuals?
Therapy for aging adults can greatly improve quality of life by providing an opportunity for them to process difficult emotions related to end-of-life, navigate relational or caregiver challenges, and develop coping skills for common mental health conditions, like anxiety or depression. Subsequent reductions in negative emotions and mental health disorder symptoms can make day-to-day living much more manageable for aging adults and those that care for them. The ongoing relationship with a trusted therapist can also help seniors combat loneliness and provide a sense of structure for their routine.

What are the qualities to look for in therapists who see seniors?
Seniors counselors, like mental health counselors in general, should be kind, empathetic, skilled at listening, and knowledgeable about their particular area of expertise. Counselors specializing in working with the senior population should be very familiar with the aging process in general and the common conditions that the elderly can face, such as dementia, depression, loneliness, and/or physical illness. Many senior counselors are also well-equipped to help caregivers and families navigate the aging process of their loved ones, and they may draw on Interpersonal Therapy to help facilitate improved interactions between seniors and those that care for them.
