I work with intelligent motivated clients who are functioning relatively well in their lives but may feel stuck in certain areas. Whether it’s a relationship, career, health issue, life transition or some other emotional or mental roadblock that has you feeling like you’re not functioning at your best, we can get down to the root of it, get clear on direction, move through it and move forward. Depending upon your needs and desires, we can also address health issues simultaneously. This is an additional optional opportunity to have another perspective in addition to other health professionals with whom you may be working.

My work includes harm reduction approaches to substance use, kink/BDSM-affirming care, ethical non-monogamy.
I work with adults navigating burnout, pressure, and patterns in relationships that don’t seem to change. Many are queer men, trans folx, first-gen professionals, adult students, or high-functioning individuals balancing productivity with disconnection, loneliness, or dissatisfaction. I also work with individuals and couples across identities, including those exploring poly relationships or ethical non-monogamy. Clients often come to me feeling stuck in intimacy, sex, or emotional patterns, and ready to understand themselves more deeply and move forward with intention.

I specialize in helping adults with getting unstuck from the effects of trauma. If you’re struggling with irritability, hard trusting others, having difficult memories or dreams, feeling anxious, sad or lonely even if you’re surrounded by people, and you're struggling with your relationship(s), you may be experiencing side effects of trauma. You’ve been postponing professional help, hoping this would go away by itself but you are realizing that now may be the time? I get it. I can help heal those internal wounds so you can enjoy your best version of yourself.

You may feel stuck in constant overthinking, worry, or a sense that your mind won’t slow down—no matter how hard you try. On the outside, you’re functioning, but internally it can feel exhausting, like you’re always anticipating what could go wrong. You don’t just want temporary relief—you want to actually feel in control again. I help you do that by identifying the patterns driving your anxiety and giving you clear, practical steps to change them.

Judging you for your substance use or other life choices?
After I got my BA in Psychology from UC Santa Cruz in 2008, I built my clinical skills as crisis counselor and manager at a crisis residential program in San Francisco, where I finished my MSW from California State East Bay. From there, I deepened my experience with 7+ years work at San Francisco AIDS Foundation as a clinician and clinical supervisor.

For the past two years I worked with individuals struggling with addiction and underlying mental health issues who were brave enough to want to try something new. It was a privilege to empower them with knowledge and tools in the recovery process. For four years before that I worked in under-resourced public schools helping children and families access therapy for (usually) the first time. There I used my creativity, flexibility, and patience to meet people wherever they were at – both psychologically and literally, in their schools, communities, and homes.

Substance Use Therapists
How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?
In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?
Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?
There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
