I work with intelligent motivated clients who are functioning relatively well in their lives but may feel stuck in certain areas. Whether it’s a relationship, career, health issue, life transition or some other emotional or mental roadblock that has you feeling like you’re not functioning at your best, we can get down to the root of it, get clear on direction, move through it and move forward. Depending upon your needs and desires, we can also address health issues simultaneously. This is an additional optional opportunity to have another perspective in addition to other health professionals with whom you may be working.

I provide compassionate therapy tailored to your particular needs. Together we would set goals and work to bring the needed changes into your life. I am not dedicated to a single particular theory or technique, but will use whatever works best for you. Often traditional talk therapy is most effective, but I have also successfully used cognitive/behavioral therapy, dream analysis, writing, art therapy, meditation, sand trays, group therapy, experiential therapy, and guided imagery. I also work to help you explore and strengthen your higher values and whatever you find most meaningful in your life.

Even though your life looks great on the surface, you feel chronically anxious, as if it could all fall apart at any moment.
Peace. Freedom. Happiness. Confidence. Those aren’t just words. They are what happens when we live our truth. The path takes courage, but you’re worth it! And the payoffs are pretty darn good. You can be your authentic self in relationships. You can be free of chronic worry. You can feel secure in yourself now. Sound good? I can help you get there.

On the outside you look like you have it together. Underneath, your chest is tight and you're scanning every face for the moment you've upset someone. You replay conversations at night, wondering if you said the wrong thing. You say you're fine when you're not, because needing something feels like being a burden. You crave connection and brace the second someone gets close. You've talked about all of this in therapy for years. You understand exactly where it comes from, but nothing is changing, because knowledge was never the missing piece. Your body has been holding this story the whole time.

I have worked with sexual assault survivors, trauma, depression, stress and anxiety, with different modalities.
This-is-important! It won’t go away when you turn your back. It won’t sort itself out while you distract yourself with other things. You may well need a hand in resolving things but only YOU can take the first step and ask for that help, which we are all PERFECTLY allowed to need sometimes. Resilience isn’t about never being angry, sad, fearful or guilty. It is about knowing how to respond appropriately.

Anxiety and depression are the two most common conditions that I treat.
I like to create an environment where the client and I are both relaxed. There are enough stressors in our day-to-day lives, I want therapy to be the one place where the clients are relaxed and can refocus on themselves and the work.

When should I seek treatment for anxiety?
Everyone feels anxious at times, but when anxiety causes disruption to your daily life, it may be time to seek help. Such disruption can be mental, physical, or both: having fear dominate your thoughts, avoiding situations or objects that bring on feelings of anxiety, or experiencing shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, or panic attacks. When these symptoms are recurrent and distressing, it may be time to talk to someone.

What are the most common types of treatment for anxiety?
Talk therapy, particularly cognitive behavioral therapy, is the most common treatment for anxiety. Studies have shown it is equally effective as medication. Other popular forms of therapy are popular, depending on a patient’s experience. Exposure therapy, for instance, can be useful for people dealing with fears and phobias, or who have experienced traumatic events. Dialectical Behavioral Therapy may be useful for patients who need help with emotion regulation. Anxiolytic medications, like benzodiazepines, can also help with calming a person enough to focus on the skills they’ve learned, and physical exercise has been shown to help symptoms of anxiety across the board.

How long does therapy for anxiety take to work?
The amount of time needed to alleviate symptoms depends on the severity of a person’s condition. Some therapies may take 5-20 weekly sessions to show results. Anti-depressant medications typically take two to four weeks before a benefit is felt. Anti-anxiety medications are felt typically within 20-30 minutes. Medications are best used to offer a patient a better headspace in which to work on techniques learned in therapy. Exercise, improved sleep habits, and meditation are effective, but takes weeks or months to show results.

How effective is treatment for anxiety?
Treatment for anxiety has been shown to be moderately to highly effective, according to a large body of psychology studies and analyses. For some people, treatment using CBT or exposure therapy alone is effective. Others respond best to a combination of medication and therapy.
