I have experience working with children, individuals, couples and families in a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, mood disorders, parenting challenges, work stress,
family
and relationship issues and various life changes since 1997.
My approach tends to be cognitive behavioral in nature and I use distress tolerance techniques (DBT). I like to tailor my approach to an individual’s goals & particular needs. What that means is that I like to collaborate with a client to find active steps to take to better one’s quality of life. It is solution-focused, and brief in nature. I believe that self-care and mindfulness are essential tools for quality of life, yet we aren’t always taught how to do that for ourselves. My clients say that I am direct, yet compassionate, and that they feel validated & empowered to make changes in their lives.

My job is to begin where you are and help you prepare for your next stage of change. I use an integrative approach, working from the inside out (objects relations,
family
systems, cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic, others) to support your process and movement. We all start with assumptions about life. Then life happens, and we have to begin again having been changed. Loss becomes growth as we embrace new and mature understanding of ourselves and life. I am a clinical psychologist with over 10 years experience working with complicated but interesting people who are addressing individual, relationship, life, and spiritual issues.

It’s vital for therapeutic success for us to connect and understand each other. To help begin this process, here is a little bit of information about me, my life, and my experiences. I am the oldest daughter in a South Asian
family
who was born in India and grew up in the United States. I refuse to discriminate, and am an LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapist. The most important thing I want you to know about me is helping my clients is my passion. There is no greater satisfaction than seeing a client grow and tackle their problems, implement the skills we’ve worked on, and find peace in their life again.

As a parent of three children, one of whom is on the Autism Spectrum, I understand how difficult parenting can be and the toll it can take on relationships. I know that in spite of our best intentions, there are times we need support and guidance.

Making the decision to talk to someone about your "problems" can be very scary and anxiety producing. What people often don't realize is that it is a very courageous step toward a more fulfilling life. I encourage my client to not only talk about their "problems" but to talk about what they do that "works". I believe that unlocking your true potential will help you to make choices that are different.

What do family therapists do?
A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.
How long does therapy for families take to work?
Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.
How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?
You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.
Is therapy for families effective?
Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
